Movies

Arrival
First off, we have to talk about how underrated and under the radar this movie went. I really began to enjoy Denis Villeneuve’s movies after this and that is why I decided to rewatch this after watching Dune Part One.
Speak No Evil
This was a weird movie. It constantly gives you the feeling of being uncomfortable even with just the conversation that happens. There is a scene where the two ladies are fighting in front of the kids about the non-mother parenting the child and everyone knows that is just an awkward conversation.
The Lincoln Lawyer Movie
The story is very well constructed. You get a really nice presentation of the main players and the side elements that play a role. I typically do not appreciate some of the side elements that are thrown in just cause, but there isn’t a single one that doesn’t pay off.
Guess Who
What hurts the movie is that it is a little on the nose for the stereotypes. This is a remake of a movie from long ago, and that might have required them to make some changes to fit current cultures, but it was just too forced at times.
Windtalkers
The actions scenes are either epic and awesome, or predictable, over the top, and boring. This was prime you never run out of ammo timeframe. They do reload, but Nicolas Cage seems to be carrying 6000 rounds of .45 for his Thompson. It is crazy.
Dune Part One
I wish I could explain to you how many times I have watched this and am just now, in November 2024, realizing I never wrote a review for this. I have tagged it in my system as watched, but never reviewed. Let me correct that egregious mistake.
S.W.A.T
Story isn’t bad. Nothing crazy going on and honestly nothing unbelievable other than all the different gangs coming together in attempt to get him out. It looked like you had Mexican Cartel, Crips or Bloods (Maybe both), and Triads all working to save this guy. That was the crazy part.
The 355
I love Jessica Chastain. She is an outstanding actress. This movie isn’t any different from her other ones with one notable exception that plagues the entire movie and the rest of the cast. Everyone is dumb and there is no character growth that isn’t a joke.
Alien Movie Anthology
Overall, I enjoyed the story (Not you Resurrection). There is action, jump scares, a creeping feeling, and just some either outstanding effects or just abysmal effects. If you include Alien3 and Resurrection, this series is only a 6. However,…
Prisoners
The story is excellent and while I had a feeling about how it was going to end, I was thrown through the loop and had to second guess the ending. It is so well written with no real sign post that I loved. This is another of Denis Villeneuve fantastic movies.
Blade Runner
My major complain for a similar movie, Alien was that the quiet pieces were just too quiet. This movie doesn’t have that issue. The music feels and adds so much to this movie that I am 90% sure it fueled music for games like Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
Blade Runner 2049
The shots in this movie are awesome. From the desert storms, the big cities, the San Diego trash sites, and to the giant digital display of Joii is just so good. This is a masterclass of blending CGI with practical effects.
John Wick Series
This has to be the best series I have ever watched with consistency. Great music and great fight scenes that you know took a lot of time to put together. Without thinking about it, I am giving the series a 9. It is the best series I have ever watched and hope that Ballerina lives up to it
A Few Good Men
This is such a good movie. There are few movies that really get the feeling and cult like dedication the Marine Corps instills in you like this movie does. While the two young Marines are a little over the top at times…
The Marvels
This movie was ok, but so full of plot holes that even to the most enamored, it doesn’t make sense. The fight scenes are lazy and short, the story is half complete, and it just feels rushed and CGI heavy.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
This movie is way funnier than it should be. Alan Ritchson and Henry Cavill play so well off of each other for this comedic moments, there are times you’d think it was a comedy rather than an action movie. You wouldn’t be wrong though, it is a comedy.
London has Fallen
I have no idea how this movie was given a 25% from Rotten Tomatoes and audiences gave it a 50%. What this movie and Olympus Has Fallen do really well is setup the story with action that pulls at your heart strings.
Don’t Worry Darling
It is not often that I don’t see the twist coming, but damn was I wrong, kind of, about the ending of this movie. They story itself is wildly incoherent at times, but it is intentional once you see the end. I think in general the story itself is a little confusing even at the end.
Gladiator
This is an oldy but a goody. Russell Crowe does an amazing job for a completely historically inaccurate movie. So I was watching this and guess it was the extended version because I saw some scenes I have NEVER seen before. I agree they should have removed them as they just really slowed down
The Beekeeper
This is an action movie with no substance that will bring you a lot of entertainment. John Wick meets Jason Bourne is the best description I can give you for Jason Statham in this movie. He is brutal and aggressive and its awesome. This is the “Bee”-rated version.
Land of Bad
What an outstanding movie. Liam Hemsworth really bulked up for this movie. I was concerned about him taking over as Geralt for but after this, I do not have those concerns The entire cast has a great sarcastic rhythm that plays into years of chemistry
Inside Man
The acting is great though. Outside the writing, I feel the cast dove into their characters and it was really good to see. There isn’t anyone that I feel cheated the role or anything else. They all are dedicated to it.
The Day After Tomorrow
This movie is weirdly entertaining. It is so over the top that you kinda forget that you are being forced into this political movie. Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal do a great job at playing their parts.
The Gentlemen
What an underrated, below the radar movie. It has done well enough to have a tv show named the same, which is what caused me to watch this movie to see if I wanted to see the TV show. I’ve seen this movie before and even years later still feel that it is a drag to get through.
The Nun II
I was thinking about a scene that had just happened with an amazing practical special effect. This scene has magazine pages flipping in a specific order and it is just wonderfully done. I was thinking about that and then the Nun popped up and got me.
Assassin’s Creed
This movie should not have gotten the hatred that it got. It does a great job of adding to the story from the Assassin’s Creed games. There is no sense of fear or why other than an ancient myth. It is like the story about a McDonalds and Taco Bell employees fighting each other.
The Lord of the Rings Movie Trilogy
The Ring of Power is found and throws the world into chaos once again after centuries of relative peace from the forces of evil. The Fellowship ebbs and wanes against those forces as they work to get Sam and Frodo to Mt. Doom to destroy the ring.
Salt
Its been a while since I have watched this movie and it holds up decently. The overall story is built on old Intelligence theory that Russia was building sleeper agents that were going to infiltrate the US. Think Black Widow with Scarlett Johansson.
Hit Man
This movie was not what I expected. I honestly had no idea what it was about and had no real intention of watching it, but my father-in-law put it on while they were visiting. The story is where I just get angry. There are so many plot holes for a “true story” that it makes no sense.
Knives Out
That is something else this movie does really well. Provides an excellent story where there is no real wasted portion of the movie. Every single scene is brought back to show either some clue that we missed watching it or some additional symbolism
Atomic Blonde
If there was ever a female Jason Bourne movie at the moment, it would be this. Close quarters combat, good ole “who is the real spy,” and tradecraft with the KGB makes this an invigorating spy movie with lots of drama. Also Charlize’s outfits are spectacular.
Crazy Stupid Love
This is one of my wife’s favorite movies. Between this and Space Force she really likes Steve Carrell, but she doesn’t like The Office. What makes the story even better is the way that it weaves all the stories together and makes for a great ending.
Ender’s Game
However, having watched it, even comparing to my memory of the book, it doesn’t hold up well. If I ever got a chance to talk to Orson Scott Card and whoever owns the film rights, I would want to redo it with a miniseries that combines both Ender’s Game and Ender’s Shadow books.
Armageddon
There are some scenes on the asteroid that still look awesome, and I really enjoyed it. In fact, upon looking into it, it was the sound and visual effects that won an Academy Award. The story is for sure not following any decent science, but it is entertaining.
The Marsh King’s Daughter
The settings are super simple, but are used to the maximum, and you get to have some sense how deep the marshes are in Michigan and to be honest I don’t think “Marsh” in Michigan. That is a Florida thing, you know?
The Fall Guy
You can see the friendship that Ryan and Emily have. These two being friends outside the movie is blatant, and it makes it so good to watch. The jokes, the chemistry, the silliness, and the witty give and take is just on point. It is everything we want from a love story or buddy comedy.
Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre
It is a Guy Ritchie film staring Jason Statham. That is the quickest description for movie people to understand what is going on. This is an airplane movie. You can’t go anywhere, it is a little under 2 hours so you can watch this and then a TV show episode and be entertained.
Smile
This is a weird movie even for horror. A really interesting way to bring in a demon who wants to sow chaos. The smiles are just generally creepy and funny to me. I can remember riding in the car with my brothers friends and one of them was staring and smiling at the other just to weird him
The Accountant
This came out years ago, 2016, but it still holds up. The explanations of Autism, especially in these days where inclusivity is more important than some other things. However, I think that this portion of the story is so pivotal and so well done in this movie that it makes him almost a superhero.
The Blind Side
I am hesitant to review this movie because it is a great movie with great acting, but the story has since soured and I am unsure the truth. My opinion of the situation will not play a part in the review. It will be reviewed as a fictional movie.
Hereditary
The pace of the movie is a slow and crawls by, but you are dragged with it by these pulses of craziness. You are left in a state of “What the hell?” that makes you just raise your eyebrows and continue to lean in.
X
This is a weird movie. I say that because it falls within a couple different genres and none of them over the other. It is a porn, a thriller, a horror, and a movie attempting to win awards. The acting is all over the place. Either weird good, and terrible
Pearl
Since this is labeled as a horror film, there is an overwhelming sense of creepy throughout the movie that lives on from the first. You are just waiting for crazy to happen and when it does, it zooms into the hell that she builds.
Maxxxine
he best of the three movies in this series, but by far the slowest and the weakest ending. This movie had a great cast weirdly. Kevin Bacon, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and of course Mia Goth. This movie is a lot easier to watch as it isn’t covered in porn…
Hereditary
The pace of the movie is a slow and crawls by, but you are dragged with it by these pulses of craziness. You are left in a state of “What the hell?” that makes you just raise your eyebrows and continue to lean in.
Civil War
I think maturity now shows Kirsten Dunst true beauty. I know that has no place in this review, but her intelligence and morality in this movie really makes her stand out against all the other cast as a true beacon of honesty in the press and beauty in a dirt, hateful, and disgusting world.
Good Will Hunting
I have never watched this movie from beginning to end, seeing scenes online or catching part of it when it was on TV. However, now that I have watched it, I can tell that I had seen more than I thought. I can also tell you that those scenes influenced so much of my growing life.
Valkyrie
This film, based on a true story about the final assassination attempt on Hitler, flew under the radar despite its stellar cast. The acting, especially from Tom Cruise, is top-notch. It’s historically intriguing and enjoyable, with minimal violence and worth the watch.
Rebel Ridge
All the major players are so good. Playing there characters with such dedication and religiousness to them. None of these people failed at making you believe they are who they are. The weirdest thing? There is no mention of “Rebel Ridge” other than once, and it doesn’t play a part in the movie.
Ransom
This 90s film feels outdated with cornstarch blood and exaggerated gun effects. While the plot, shifting between victims and kidnappers, lacks depth in the kidnappers’ motives, Mel Gibson and Rene Russo’s performances stand out. Despite slow pacing, it’s still an entertaining watch.
Immaculate
I am honestly not sure why I watched this other than it being the beginning of spooky season, and I am very sorry that I did. I was expecting a horror film and got a nun slasher film with plot holes and unanswered questions the size of a VW bus.
Trap
I enjoyed the movie and the acting was good. There wasn’t as much suspense as the trailers presented or as previous movies and waiting for that is still happening. It never happens. That is what really hurts this movie and because of that…
The Bikeriders
I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from this movie, but it wasn’t this. This was a consistent pace with lots of drama. There are peaks of action that kept you involved. Overall, I think that it was a good movie to watch and was more enjoyable than I expected.
Road House 2024
This movie was either entertaining or frustratingly stupid. This problem starts with the story and the writing. So the main premise of the story, UFC fighter turns bouncer, is fine makes sense. The bigger story of an ultrarich boy trying to take over this small town is outrageously stupid.

TV Shows

Reacher
Where I think this show did a disservice to the books and character is not continuing the idea of the loner that he is. In the books, what makes him a what he is just a guy doing the Lord’s work because he is in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Agatha All Along
This was an absolutely surprising show. I am not mad at any of the acting and the setting is really good. They do this weird thing where if you really want to pay attention you can tell that it is this technique of a painted background. However, it is painted in a way that it looks far away.
The Continental
This miniseries is full of amazing fight scenes that make no sense, weapon damage that is beyond the realm of normality, and slower than the snail that has finally catching up to you.
MythBusters
“MythBusters is a Trojan Horse of reason, hiding behind a thin veil of explosives.” “Sciencebait rather than jailbait.” This is a super entertaining show, just don’t binge-watch it.
Presumed Innocent
The show is good. It tells a good story with suspense, and it is really well written. The acting team is superb. The kids do well with there acting and are super believable. They play a great role and give some additional depth to the story that I think played a big part in me enjoying the show.
Young Sheldon
What is really crazy is watching these kids grow into these characters. The entire cast just makes a concerted effort to really play into these characters and knowing that this show is 7 seasons long you really forget how little they were when this started.
For All Mankind
This show killed itself with the incestuous relationship that occurs earlier in the series. Their decision to have this as part of the story line forces them to continue to recover in future seasons as those characters were forcibly removed from the show.
Game Changer
Overall, as it is with “Whose Line is it Anyway?” some episodes are mind-numbingly boring. Others are hysterical, fall on the ground laughing. Most of the episodes are ok with some splashes of outrageousness that are either funny or blindsiding.
The Office
This show is beloved and for the first 6 seasons, that makes sense. However, Season 7 and 8 are just a drag with half of season 9 being pointless, the first half obviously.
Fallout
If you like the Fallout games, you will love this show. There is a lot of dumb humor that you would get in the game, outright gory weapon violence, and some surprising emotional beats.
Mr. Robot
While I think this show was some of the worst writing that could ever have been done, the best acting occurred in the 4th season. Remi Malek and Christian Slater could be on a clinic for the midseason monologues and dialogues. It was emotional. It was powerful. It came 3 seasons too late.
Shogun
The start of this show is slow. However, Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki are simply putting on a clinic to whomever aspires to be in Hollywood. I cannot express to you how amazing their performance was.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
This isn’t a crazy good show. It is highly entertaining in the fact that it is easy to jump in and out of the show. There are some reoccurring jokes, but you can pick up on the theme pretty quickly. The jokes are pretty low brow, but they are for sure fun.
Halo
I am going to get ahead and tell you that my review will be a hot take for super fans of the books/games. Him taking off his helmet is NOT THAT BIG A DEAL! Also, Pablo Schreiber does an amazing job of being Master Chief.
The Andromeda Strain Miniseries
he show does follow the book fairly well from what I remember. There might have been some deviations, but I didn’t see the changes as being so much that it takes away from the book/show. There is a ton of great actors in this, and I am really surprised that it kind of fell under the radar.

Books

The Bone Orchard
It took me so long to figure out how the character structures were as far as the main characters that you follow that I almost put it down. I am glad that I didn’t as it was an interesting read, but it could have been so much more.
Code Talker
Without these brave men, these champions of their cause and way of life, the Marines would never have taken Guadalcanal, Peleliu, or Iwo Jima. You will get the same information from the quotes used in the book from Marine and Army leadership who served with them.
Project Hail Mary
“Project Hail Mary is a absolute fantastic book that scratches this deep nostalgia of being a kid and wanting to be an astronaut and scientist and so much more.” With a blend of anxiety, suspense, joy, and surprise, Project Hail Mary is the best science fiction book you will ever read.
Die Trying
I read this and honestly was more surprised by how plausible it could be with some notable exceptions as compared to others. There are a lot of things that would stop someone like Jack from helping with an investigation like in the first book, but not much would stop someone from trying to escape.
Ninth House
Secret societies have always captured the imagination of the masses. There are things in our world that we can’t explain. This book provides a believable story line that is for sure false, is full of enough truth, that you don’t care. Some of the characters are annoying, but overall it is good.
State of the Union
The early part of this series always upset me with the implausibility of some actions that happen. However, the action in this story is where it starts to make the series a more enjoyable read. Thor does a great job of telling a compelling story with a possible event that could have happened.
Black Site
This was an interesting book that presents what could be the truth about how the CIA saw their role when dealing with “Guests.” Its ability to talk about the judicial search for what was legal and required of the CIA when conducting interrogations.

Games

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
It is Call of Duty game. If you watch the video above, I am just playing through some of the horror portion and the number of times that I nearly jumped out of my skin is crazy. The rest of the game is nothing different. Decent gun fighting and equipment.
Grand Theft Auto V
I played this when it first came out in 2013. I worked at GameStop part-time during the holidays while I was active duty and was able to see the rush this game had on the world. I VIVIDLY remember a mom not paying attention to what game her young son had picked up and was about to buy it…
The Outer Worlds
I originally played this when it came out in 2019 and honestly I am surprised how far I got and didn’t finish it. The fact that I made it to the second to last planet and then didn’t finish is the testament as to how upset I was about this game. The gameplay is fun, but…
Warhammer 40k Space Marine II
The gameplay is solid. I mean you are tearing into, mostly, bugs and the executions and gun finishes are really fun. The bigger issue for the campaign gameplay is that most of the guns feel the same, at least for the automatic ones. There isn’t a lot of variety in the way they look either.
