Review
What an outstanding movie. Liam Hemsworth really bulked up for this movie. I was concerned about him taking over as Geralt for The Witcher, but after this, I do not have those concerns anymore. He does a fantastic job of playing the new guy and learning as he goes. The entire cast has a great sarcastic rhythm that plays into years of chemistry and a little hazing of the new guy. What makes this even better is that it is Luke Hemsworth, Liam's older brother, that is the first to mess with him a bit. You can see the jabs there that have a little bit of history.
For being a fictional movie, their military advisor did a great job. It is believable, realistic, and gritty. However, their budget ran out about halfway though the movie. The explosions, FPV drone shots, and practical gore all stop after the first major gun fight. Once he runs away the exfil the first time, it takes a HARD hit. The blood afterward is cornsyrupy, the wrong color red, and just watery. Looks like the ran with Kool-aid over them. There are not more explosions that you see, there are no more visible impacts of bullets even though the actors are getting hit. You see raised flesh afterward, but not the practical affect of them getting hit.
Russell Crowe's character doesn't make sense. He is at least 50, is a Captain (O-3), and joined in '95. So he has been in the Air Force for 30 years? Yeah..... not a chance. Service limitations do apply and there are plenty of people who would be willing to be a drone pilot so it isn't that. I like his character, but it doesn't make sense. They gave him a back story that would 1000% have gotten him kicked out for insubordination at least twice before.
My Rating
Solid movie. My wife's attention, which is notoriously short during movies, was very much engaged for this movie. There are some scenes early on that are visceral and gnarly. Throughout the entire movie there are some outstanding cinematic shots. That is one of my favorite parts of this movie. Solid. The FPV is a bit much as it always is, but there was some really cool scenes. This is a solid 9 and needs to be watched.
Parental Rating
There is an absolute TON of language and gore (Gore only in the first half). No sex though, not that you would expect it. There is a great war story here, but not enough that my mom will want to watch. Mom rejects, but Dad is 100% in. Dad approved. Mom rejected.
