The Warrior Poet Way
I really appreciate a book that puts a challenge to you after discussing a theory. As a Marine, the word "Practicum" really sets me up for success. It makes me want to complete them. Even without that, the practicums are directly tied to the chapter and are well within reach.
The Book in 1 Sentence
A very well written book that takes a very specific point of view about why men should be dangerous and capable of poetry.
Brief Review
I knew walking into this book, there was going to be parts of this book that I wouldn't enjoy. I have watched his YouTube channel and mainly am there for the weapon's content to make myself a better shooter. However, I have also watched and enjoyed his business content and interviews about some items. Much like his online content, his book does a great job of presenting his side without saying you have to follow his path. However, he does spend time being more preachy than I'd appreciate.
Why I Read this book
He is an interesting personality.
In-Depth Review (Favorite Quotes)
I really appreciate a book that puts a challenge to you after discussing a theory. As a Marine, the word "Practicum" really sets me up for success. It makes me want to complete them. Even without that, the practicums are directly tied to the chapter and are well within reach. I also think they allow for expanding on the lessons he was talking about.
At a high level, I agree with the lessons he was present. I think there is a responsibility for men to still be strong, as he would say dangerous. However, it is that choice to not be dangerous unless it is needed that makes it stand out. However, to not be dangerous, you can't fill that time with the void. You require something. You need to do something. That something is a softening experience that men need to make them poets so they are not just aggressive.
Where he loses me, is his reliance and exclusive depiction of Christian authority, Christian books and authors, and quotes about the Christian faith. This is my no means me diminish his faith, in fact I applaud his stance, consistency, and dedication to his faith. I mean, I am about to do some weapons training with him and that doesn't discourage me. However, in the book, I think he could bring more evidence to make his argument pulling from other resources, even from the classic Stoic philosophers. I think that could have moved him away from being a more "Religious" book, and move him into a much broader readership.
How my life ideas have changed as a result of reading the book
I am actually going to fill this section out. There was a section in the book that talked about living for something greater than yourself. With this in mind + trying to become a better man, I have been working on being slower to anger and better at my ability to support my wife. I am a direct person, the Marines taught me that there is no need to beat around the bush. However, that doesn't work for my wife. She is a beautifully soft and empathetic person who is stepping far outside of her comfort zone to work on her doctorate. She needs not just the provider and protect, but the poet and safe space.
Rating
Changing who I am hasn't been easy. You can ask my wife how I was when we first started dating to now. It has taken a lot of time to be softer, but that doesn't take away from feeling of wanting to protect and fix the world around us. That is exactly what this book is about. Finding that person who helps to round you out, but to never lose the ability to be dangerous to criminals or tyrants. I really enjoyed this book. Any book that uses personal stories to enhance a theory is why I love personal memoirs. It is this balance between those two that make a great book. This is a great book that I think more people should read, and mainly for those who are a bit more liberal in their political beliefs. I initially was going to give this an 8, but as I write this, I see that I might have been to hard on the religious content, rather than looking at as a whole concept. This is a 9.
