Tribe
This book provides an interesting idea, but honestly fails to deliver what could be an awesome universe. There are consistent moments in the book that should be serious, that are under cut by silly writing and a silly character.
The Book in 1 Sentence
The gods of old are real and because they had sex with everyone, looking at you Zeus, their genes are still floating around out there.
Brief Review
This book provides an interesting idea, but honestly fails to deliver what could be an awesome universe. There are consistent moments in the book that should be serious, that are under cut by silly writing and a silly character. A veritable "I was born in the wrong generation" kid who is sick, but not really sick.
Why I Read this book
It's got the Spartan logo I thought it would be cool.
In-Depth Review
I will attempt to not absolutely destroy this book, but it is at best a young adult fiction novel. Not saying that those are bad, just that they typically do not require a reading skill that most kids don't have in middle school.
The story itself is interesting. The idea that the gods from Greek Mythology, and possibly others, are really just changes in DNA is a great idea. Something I wish would be explored more, just not by this author. Its great premise, but just falls flat without any science. It's a writing imagination without any research. I mean, at least The Davinci Code had some research. This had more research into the city of Boston than even Greek Mythology.
That brings me to another point. The Greek mythology is limited, superficial, and just low brow what you would have learned in middle school or watching a movie. There is a treasure trove of story there that could have been pulled from, and it was left on the cutting room floor.
I can’t tell you how quickly I wanted to finish this book because I couldn’t take it seriously. I did like the character Henry because he was funny. It was refreshing, but he was heavy-handed on writing.
Rating
This book can’t be taken seriously. This is also book 4 of the universe (The author has 3 series that coincide with the same final book. This is book 1 of series 3) It’s distracting when it should be serious. It’s a 5. Furthermore, it needs some TLC to make it a legitimate adult read.
