Review

This movie was either entertaining or frustratingly stupid. This problem starts with the story and the writing. So the main premise of the story, UFC fighter turns bouncer, is fine makes sense. The bigger story of an ultrarich boy trying to take over this small town is outrageously stupid. Just in general, there is no way a small town local Sheriff would have that kind of power that the rich boy could build a giant resort wiping out a town.

The characters themselves have some excessively bad lines. To the point that they don't make sense. Dalton is pretty good playing a simple man who honestly wants to be left alone. The rest of the characters are just NPCs in the background doing dumb things. For instance, near the end of the movie a patron walks into the bar that is missing half a ruff, a truck has plowed through the front entry, and there is a small boat on the patio asking "Are y'all still open?" and the response was "We are always open" which no business would ever be open with that kind of liability plus the police were there. Stupid writing.

I will say this, the setting is very beautiful and the relationship between Charlie and Dalton is really cute. Gives small town Florida vibes which is familiar since that is where I grew up. For the most part, the main characters are acted very well. McGregor is the worst of them. I think he was supposed to be a comic relief bad guy, but they already had a funny bad guy who wasn't so bad. So I am not sure what his point was.

Lastly I need to move into the camera work during fight scenes. It was so hard to watch and understand what was going on a lot of the time because the camera was doing weird POV or cut in and out from different perspectives. It is hard to watch, but I am sure they are doing it to hide the stunt performers.

My Rating

I initially gave this a 7 as I enjoyed watching it. Then I started writing this review and thinking about a bar being open when a boat is on the deck and a truck in the entryway, someone yelling "BAR FIGHT!" and punching a random next to them. It reminded me of the scene from Kingsman: The Secret Service at the church where everyone just starts killing each other. These are aggressively stupid scenes. So I knocked it down to a 6, however those scenes made me chuckle, once, and so I was entertained by it. So back to a 7, but that feels generous. That makes it is a 7*.

Parental Rating

Language, obviously a lot of violence, and no sex. I think my dad would watch it as I remember him watching the Patrick Swayze version years ago. My mom has no need or desire to watch this. So approved by Dad and rejected by Mom.
