Review
I wish I could explain to you how many times I have watched this and am just now, in November 2024, realizing I never wrote a review for this. I have tagged it in my system as watched, but never reviewed. Let me correct that egregious mistake.
Dune the movie is the first half of the Dune Book. To be honest, this book needed to be split into two parts, and they stopped it at the right point. Just as it shifts from external political turmoil, to desert power.
I am not a big fan of Timothée Chalamet or Rebecca Ferguson traditionally, but I feel both of them brought these characters to life from my brain. I completely feel they match the parts in their emotions, intensity, and chemistry. They are also reinforced by Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, and Stellan Skarsgård. Honestly, I didn't realize how good of an actor Stephan McKinley Henderson was until Civil War, but watching him in this should have given it way. This is just a crazy cast to have.
Also, the translation from book to Movie is very well done. I read this not long after watching it previously and there isn't anything truly missing. You do lose some buried leads for the surprises in the next movie, but nothing that is important or that takes away from this movie.
The fighting is also just expertly visualized for technology that doesn't exist. The gliders as well are just very well-designed.
Rating
I love watching this movie. It tells a great story and keeps you interested with outstanding musical score. There are some parts where the acting is pushed a little hard, but overall it is almost a perfect movie. As Sam would say from most recent podcast Ep 4 - Muther Knows Best: Unpacking Aliens’ Influence on Sci-Fi and Horror , "10 is a masterpiece" and this is just shy of that. I give it a 9.
Parental Rating
There is NO sex or nudity (Oscar Isaac does have a scene where he is naked, but the table blocks anything from view). There is NO language. Imagine that. There is fighting, violence, and realistic depictions of battle wounds, but that is it. For some specific examples of the above, see this link at IMDB. The story is all about how a family movies forward together. What parent wouldn't want to see that? Approved by both.
