Assassin's Apprentice

My "Book in 1 Sentence" is dead on. I have never been so looking forward to something to happen, and it never did. This kid grows up in a keep where half the family hates him, the other half is ok with him or loved his dad, and so he is given a modicum of freedom and support.

Assassin's Apprentice

The Book in 1 Sentence

A book where the main character goes through life during "ye olde times" times as a royal bastard.

Brief Review

My "Book in 1 Sentence" is dead on. I have never been so looking forward to something to happen, and it never did. This kid grows up in a keep where half the family hates him, the other half is ok with him or loved his dad, and so he is given a modicum of freedom and support.

Why I Read this book

It was recommended to me by my friend and co-host on the Epic Screen Time Podcast Sam. It might be his favorite series if memory serves me correctly.

In-Depth Review (Favorite Quotes)

Ok, so this book is well written. It is very easy to follow, and the characters are characters. Really they are characters. They are the most predictable, short-sighted, singularly focused, and boring people in narrative format.

Ok, that might a bit hard to the paint. However, I cannot figure out why he recommended this book, why George R. R. Martin thought this series was good. From beginning to end, other than growing up and going to school, there isn't anything that really happens. Yes there is some element of mysticism in the book that he learns, kind of.

I think the world setting is interesting in what was provided. I think Fitz is a cool character and the political back and forth makes sense. It is the powers called Skill and Wit that were touched on and never really explored. The basics of them is outlined, but that is it. I know there are two more books in the series, but I checked, and it doesn't change much.

Rating

I am dogging on this book. I worked very hard to like this book and wanted to enjoy it, but it just falls flat. The story is good and like I said it is well written. The story has merit and has potential, but it just needed more. The story is about an Assassin's Apprentice, and the part of the book where HE WAS SENT TO KILL PEOPLE is glossed over. Paraphrasing, but the words are "I was sent to kill this type of person and this, but because I had killed Red Raider, I didn't feel the weight I expected." It is a 6, and I will not be reading the rest of the series.
