Armageddon

There are some scenes on the asteroid that still look awesome, and I really enjoyed it. In fact, upon looking into it, it was the sound and visual effects that won an Academy Award. The story is for sure not following any decent science, but it is entertaining.

Review

I am not sure why my friend was talking about this movie the other day when he came by, but we talked a couple scenes, and then I was able to use it in Codewords so it sat on my brain for a week so I decided to watch it.

This is an old movie, 1998, has some great practical sets that really allow this movie to withstand the test of time. There are some scenes on the asteroid that still look awesome, and I really enjoyed it. In fact, upon looking into it, it was the sound and visual effects that won an Academy Award. The story is for sure not following any decent science, but it is entertaining.

The movie's acting when I saw it as a younger man shows some serious chops. Early Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, and Bruce Willis. You also have Steve Buscemi, Owen Wilson (Which I totally forgot about), and Billy Bob Thornton in his best performance that I have seen, granted I haven't seen a lot. However, 20 years later, these performances still stand up. Which again shows you how well this movie was directed, acted, and taken care of.

My Rating

It isn't the greatest movie, however I was really enjoying watching it. The acting is so good with Steve really making me laugh. Michael Clark Duncan and Will Paton, who feels to be an alternate universe character from Remember the Titans, are so good. Watching for their parts is totally worthwhile. I think the acting is what makes this movie so memorable. Some of the asteroid scenes I also think played a huge part and might have been sampled in 2012 and Day After Tomorrow. It is also an early Michael Bay film and you can see his style coming through. This is a great movie that I want to give it a super high score, but there are some story plots that just don't make sense. For that reason, it is an 8.

Parental Rating

I watched this originally with my parents. There is no nudity, but a couple suggestive scenes. Language is limited to a 90s PG-13 movie so they were not pushing the boundaries. Even when people die, there isn't gore, but death is there. I think because of how it ends, it will play more than usual to my mom. So I am going to say Approved by both of them.
