A Knight's Tale

This is easily one of my favorite movies. I haven't watched it in years, but I was so happy to revisit it. With solid performances, great set design, funny characters, and a plot point being that choices matter no matter where you are from, it is a stellar movie even decades later.

A Knight's Tale

Synopsis

A peasant squire and his friends create a new identity for him to compete as a knight, but that plan doesn't play out just right. Especially, when a girl makes the squire swoon.

Review

As the dude from the Unsubscribe Podcast said, "this isn't a good movie, but it is one of my favorites" and that is the most accurate sentence about this movie.

This story is a blend of growth, pride, and childish 70s/80s nostalgia. With the cast singing "We Will Rock You" as part of the opening. There is this weird blend of deep medieval rhythm and modern jokes in the dialogue, and I am a fan of it. As I write this, I feel that it is really well done.

I think this is the movie that made me love the acting of Mark Addy and Heath Ledger. We also get Jarvis, sorry Paul Bettany. This cast is so good in their roles. There isn't a person that does poorly. Heath is just outstanding in his presentation. There is a scene where his friends are telling him to run, and he says "I am a knight. I cannot run. I will put myself to the Hazard." This moment, this line, this delivery has sat with me for 11 years. It is, what would be considered now, a raw line.

The last thing I will say about this movie is really that there is no weak part. It is all solid and decent, without diving too low or having a part that stands out as too good making the rest look bad.

My Rating

This is easily one of my favorite movies. I haven't watched it in years, but I was so happy to revisit it. With solid performances, great set design, funny characters, and a plot point being that choices matter no matter where you are from, it is a stellar movie even decades later. This is an 8. No buts about it.

Parental Rating

The language is the only hiccup here. It isn't pervasive, but it is there. The blood is minimal and the only scene that might be considered a sex scene is more illusion because it ends. I think because of the morals of this movie, my mom's rule of enjoying more Family oriented movies will apply. My dad is in as well as the movie is funny and action oriented. Approved by both.
