Synopsis

A former stuntman is coerced into coming back into the field to support a former paramour. This also means he is looking for the actor he portrays who has gone missing.

Review

This movie gives you EXACTLY what you expect. Lots of stuns, a decent story, witty commentary, and a decent love story. Everything is over the top and nothing is over the top at the same point.

You can see the friendship that Ryan and Emily have. These two being friends outside the movie is blatant, and it makes it so good to watch. The jokes, the chemistry, the silliness, and the witty give and take is just on point. It is everything we want from a love story or buddy comedy.

Since this is a stunt film, we should talk about the action. First off, the irony that this movie is about a stun double and him being pushed to the background for the actor and the actor getting upset about it is funny. Then you turn around and watch the closing credits, and you see that the “stun double” had multiple stun doubles to get all the stuns done correctly. That aside, the action is awesome. Chase seen, dog friendships, explosions, choreographed fights, one-shots, and all other sorts of buffoonery. I mean it is an adaptation of a TV series from the 80s which makes sense. It is a testament to the effort of stunt performers and their abilities from a life of dedication. It also makes you think, "I'd do this job.” Also, the Emily Blunt + Ryan Gosling fight scene is outstanding and has great callbacks to John Wick Chapter 4 in the library where he pushes the book into the giant's throat.

The story is so well done. Not too deep, a couple of twist, and steady plot loyalty from all the cast. It was so good that my wife paid attention the ENTIRE movie.

My Rating

I obviously loved this movie. My wife called it “Cute and fun. Full of action,” all while really paying attention. She told her parents that they would like it, and they had seen it and enjoyed it. I want to give it a 10. It is everything I wanted out of the movie, it was super fun, funny, and full of classic and new action. However, there is just a lack of depth to the story that makes it less than perfect. It is a 9.

Parental Rating

OOO this will be fun. So language is there, but not over the top. Violence is layered in a stunt guy behind-the-scenes type. What I mean is that there are intentional things that help fights flow because of cushions being placed by the characters. No sex and limited Gore. The story is light-hearted and fun and about falling in love again. Approved by both. Oh yeah, limited drug use, however it comes via a spiked drink so it isn't intentional like seeing someone shoot up heroin.
