Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Synopsis

After years of peace, a new threat emerges threatening the entire galaxy. With that new threat, a new resistance also rises and is searching for Luke Skywalker after he goes missing. Finn, an Ex-Stormtrooper, Poe, a pilot, and Rey, a scavenger, all must work together to find a way to stop "Starkiller."

Review

Let me start by saying I really enjoyed this movie when it first came out. This is probably the first time I have watched it in a couple of years and I can see the complaints people have.

One thing that does bother me is the weird little Finn reaching for her hand and her saying "Stop grabbing my hand." I get it from a character prospective, but I am not sure why it is in the movie. They could have just run. Why through this in. Finn's character has been training to kill things, not care. We know it didn't stick with him, but this is too far to the other side. It makes no sense.

The story is fun, it brings in a lot of the old things that were good from both the original trilogy and the prequels, to become something new. Still silly humor, a bit of slap stick, and some emotional beats that make for an entertaining movie. What does take away from the story is the astronomical growth in the force that Rey has. It is too fast. I tried to think about it like the movie The One where the force is shared between people and with so few, it's really powerful in a couple. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the universe and how it is set. She just is full of plot armor. Her lightsaber fight with Kylo is the perfect example of that.

I have no real issue with the acting in this. I can get sucked into the story based on how they play it and don't see any issues with it. Finn is a dude who never has had a friend so he is clingy. Rey wants nothing to do with anyone and at the same time wants to be loved. Poe is just a fly boy. He knows what he is good at and does that. John, Daisy, and Oscar are great in their roles.

My Rating

One of my friends said that the jokes were lame in this movie, and I see them as being forced when I watch this again with a more critical eye. But when I step back and look at it at the time without the hate that I have for Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, they are like Dad jokes. They aren't meant to be thinkers and have to hit a wide audience. I am cool with them, just like I am cool with this movie. I find this movie to be great. Adam Driver was a nobody, but is the best part of this movie. Love the dude.

Parental Rating

No sex, limited to no language, and the violence is not graphic. My dad is in, and my mom would watch it just to remember the old movies. I am going to say approved by both of them.
