Soul Surfer

Synopsis

A young teen, whose whole life is competing in professional surfing competitions is bitten by a shark while paddling during a training session. She doesn't rest and pushes on to continue her career.

Review

This is a really pleasant story. It is cheesy at times, but I am pretty sure that is either accurate to the real story or a publisher/directors choice as it is presented as a faith based movie.

Annasophia, Dennis Quaid, and Helen Hunt are very natural and believable in their roles. Annasophia especially with how she had to act with a CGI'd missing arm. Speaking of that CGI, it is excellent for that portion. They spent a lot of time doing that, and I think it paid off. There are some other portions, like when the camera is on her face while she is in the curl of the wave (I am obviously not a surfer, so I have no idea what that is called) that SCREAM green screen like Star Wars Episode I.

The rest of the cast is just background noise. I am not impressed or care about any of the other cast members, especially Carrie Underwood, as they just feel insignificant and there. I am not sure if it is the constraints of the box they were put into or just the way it was cut, but it just seems like they have crap lines.

Speaking that this is based on a true story, the story is good and inspiring. It is really impressive what she was able to do so shortly after the attack. I hope she is still able to help others who have lost limbs to push forward into "normal."

My Rating

I watched this with my wife as she needed to review it for her doctorate. It was fun to watch. Am I screaming to rewatch it? No. Will I ever? Probably not. Would I recommend it as a clean movie for my more conservative/religious friends to watch? Absolutely. However, that isn't the only place it is good for. This is a heartwarming story. It's a feel good movie that fits that times the message. I am giving it a 7, I think the main three cast members were awesome and they story well presented, but it just was overly cheesy.

Parental Rating

They would absolutely love this movie. It would be a bit boring for my dad, but he would appreciate it. My mom is 100% in. No language, limited violence/blood, and full of family. Approved by both.
