Synopsis

Two female LDS missionaries arrive at a house where someone has asked for more information. When they arrive, they are manipulated into having a theological debate that doesn't go the way they expected.

Review

This is a crazy movie. The setup is excellent in today's time when you have to be careful going to someone's house rather than being careful getting into a stranger's car that you called from the internet.

This is the role that in my mental image of Hugh Grant, he should play. He has always come across as a creep to me. I didn't like him in The Gentlemen, I have seen clips from his old RomComs and those are atrocious. This is where he just fits the bill. A condescending, egotistical, elitist, creep that just constantly works to manipulate people. His entire life is built on that idea of how he can do that. His character screams red flags and that is where I think the writing is poorly done. The caveat to that statement is that I do not know the pressure that the LDS church puts on the missionaries, but I can only imagine what that would look like for the woman of the church. There is an opening scene that kind of highlights the internal pressure, but I still think in today's culture, they wouldn't have gone in. But maybe they aren't as jaded as I am.

Sophie and Chloe were awesome. I really think that they were given a task and went above and beyond in their application of said task. It was fascinating to watch their reactions and movement when dealing with the events that Hugh's character put in place and just the mental math they were able to do.

My Rating

I watched this with my wife and her parents, and it was a good movie to watch. Sam recommended this, and I am very happy he did. It was creepy the whole way through, and it is really well done. No crazy special effects, just awesome practical effects that end up being plot points. This movie was really well done and is a great reminder of the good movies that A24 can do. I am going to give this an 8.

Parental Rating

Lots of cult like practices, arguments about faith, graphic violence, and some language. Content alone, both my parents are out. They would never watch this. However, based on the rules, my dad would approve and Mom rejects.
