Gladiator II

Synopsis

Years after being forced to run from home, Rome has again fallen to twin tyrannical emperors looking to force the world under their rule. The Gladiator must fight for himself and learn to lead.

Review

This is basically scene for scene the same as Gladiator. Yes there are some differences, but the story is the same. Solider gets picked up as a gladiator and then has to lead other gladiators to fight against overwhelming odds. This means people look into his background and find out that he isn't a normal gladiator. Then they lead a revolt that changes what SHOULD happen in Rome.

My frustration with this movie really comes from either the cut of the movie and the final fight. Let me get through the good first before talking about this. The acting is really good. Pulling in some characters and team from the old movie to tell the story is great. Really nice to see the build from the old story while confirming some theories that we had back in the day.

The fighting is well done. Even the CGI'd items look good and don't take away from the fights too much. The color grading looks good, and the story is pretty good even if redundant. I can't complain too much.

Ok, back to the complaints. There is a scene where they are in a water battle in the Colosseum. They break the oars and then ram the ship. However, the cuts of the scene shows that they could have just rammed the ship like 5 minutes before with the same results. It just stands out to me. Add that with the final fight scene being 3 moves and then it is over. It is ungodly short.

My Rating

The final fight scene along with a pushy ending leads to a lack luster end to a lack luster film. All of us at Epic Screen Time watched this together and while we gave it a higher score at the time of viewing (a 7 so not much higher), none of us look back at this fondly. It is a 6. Lack of action, lack of a good ending.

Parental Rating

My dad really enjoyed Gladiator and this one is right in line with the same style. The language is light, the violence high, and the sex is not in sight. My dad is in. My mom while this is a very violent movie, I think she would watch it with the boys and enjoy it as it is about family. Found and blood. Approved by both.
