The fact that this is Jordan Peele has always surprised me. It was even more so in 2017 when this came out and we all knew him as the comedian. Now, we have this movie plus Us and Nope, maybe more, that we attribute to his outstanding horror filmography.

Synopsis

An African-American goes home with his White girlfriend for a weekend trip to her parents place. The simple tension of a mixed-race couple reaches a boiling point when the rest of the extended family shows up.

Review

The fact that this is Jordan Peele has always surprised me. It was even more so in 2017 when this came out and we all knew him as the comedian. Now, we have this movie plus Us and Nope, maybe more, that we attribute to his outstanding horror filmography.

The plot is outstanding. Just from a tension building aspect, there is so much uncomfortableness in the early movie that you miss some of the more interesting things that show you what is happening/is going to happen later in the movie. I am sure there is some underlying commentary about how people have to adopt white culture, but as a white dude, I am not qualified to speak on that. However, I can comment and say that I see it in this movie and what they did and understand why it was written that way.

Speaking of writing, there isn't a single line wasted in this movie. Each cast member plays it so well. The flipping between overt racism disguised in jest to subtlety running through their conversation is just so well done. We even have the "No no no" that is expertly done in Obsession, played in subtlety here. You just watch these incredible actors and actresses come alive.

My Rating

This is a movie that doesn't have a rewatchable function over and over. I think waiting years between watches is what makes you say "oh damn" again when thing happen because you have forgotten the twists. The creepiest part of all of this was the girl eating her cereal. Who bits a froot loop in half, chews, and then drinks milk through a straw? Wild. This is an excellent movie. Hard stop. I am giving it an 9.

Parental Rating

Language, gore, and some very expressive thoughts by Rod make this an uncomfortable movie for my parents. My dad is going to be out in the opening call with Rod and Chris. Mom will for sure be out with the brain surgery scenes. Rejected by both.
