Backrooms

Am I missing something? Why is this so important to people now and had such a big impact on things in gaming in the last couple of years? I just don't get it. This movie doesn't do a lot for me into the idea of pulling me into the mystery of what is going on. Is this a fever dream? Psychosis?

Review

Am I missing something? Why is this so important to people now and had such a big impact on things in gaming in the last couple of years? I just don't get it. This movie doesn't do a lot for me into the idea of pulling me into the mystery of what is going on. I'd be more inclined to believe that all of this is some fever dream or psychosis from the dude than some magic. I still don't understand how people end up in the backrooms or the lore and that is something this movie does not present well.

Chiwetel is good in the movie. He plays a great kind of down on his luck guy. He also has an "It's my way or the highway" vibe kind of like in Doctor Strange. I think that he is my favorite part of this especially during the dinner scene. You get this feeling that he is one to something, but at the same time, so far out of it that he isn't right. Renate Reinsve, is fine. I am not sure her character really added anything to this movie and I would have rather seen Lukita Maxwell from Shrinking have a bigger role of maybe a child looking for him or something.

The special effects were cool. I liked the weird pirate and the people in the backrooms were very interesting. The CGI they did was very well done, but it is the scenes without it that are cool. Just these unusual rooms with a pool that isn't right, a pile of clothes, a Christmas tree with 4 toys. That is where you get a bit of the creep.

My Rating

A friend of mine really enjoyed this movie. I will never watch it again. I don't think that it does anything for the industry as a story, but the fact that a young kind was able to do so much on a limited budget like Obsession does tell the industry that we don't need Marvel Phase 3 budgets to have a good movie. Likewise, I wanted more; more scares, more story, more lore. Overall, I just wanted more for me to get into this. With all that, I think it is a 6 at best.

Parental Rating

Language, a scalping, and yeah. No family elements, no real action to keep my dad involved. Rejected by both, but part of that is because it is a lack luster movie.
