Brief Review

I think we have entered the era of these books hitting their formula. While the book is entertaining, and I have no real issues with the book, I found that some relationships made no sense and others made perfect sense. The story does make it sound like the FBI and the Secret Service are completely useless and have dumb policies.

continuing the series especially since the Reacher series has a spin-off for Neagley

In-Depth Review (Favorite Quotes)

This book has a really interesting start. It also doesn't follow real life when it comes to weapons and suppressors. It starts with a sniper shot that missed and "tasseled his hair without any issue, no one noticing." If a bullet is move so slow that it barely move the hair it flew over, then it might not have done terminal damage. There also would have been a follow-up shot, but no "they realized they weren't ready." For how much hatred and violence these people had towards their target, they could have and would have taken another shot. Assuming it was the same rifle used later, than it would have made a noise flying over the head of target enough to make them duck.

I really like the introduction of Neagley. She has a defined character and works well with Reacher, as to be expected. I do find that she was given a bit a plot armor or bolstering as she was defined as being a better investigator than Reacher and Reacher has been almost supernatural in the series so far. With all of that, I don't see her making any suggestions that lead to some epiphany or anything along those lines. She mainly just read Reacher.

The whole tie in to Reacher's brother seems odd. I can understand people still knowing him, but 5 years later, there isn't anyway that Reacher would have the sway he did with the Secret Service. For the sake of the book, I can buy in, but it did take you out of it since there was no contract that hired Reacher and Neagley until later.

Rating

Like I said, this book matches the formula of the previous books. The story is somewhat entertaining, but I had an issue with some story points. There are some simple things that happened at the end of the book that only work to help Reacher in a way that makes him win rather than what I would think actually happen. You could argue arrogance on their part, but that same arrogance always works in Reacher's favor. All those things aside, I still enjoyed the book and was entertained. This is a 7.
