Synopsis

Navy SEALs are on a mission in Iraq and chaos erupts in this story told through the memories of the individuals involved.

Review

A movie that is based on a true story that is labeled as "PTSD inducing." For that, I have quasi avoided it for watching by myself. While it is an accurate statement, I should not have avoided it.

What this movie does so well is the sound design. Much like The Covenant, it is one of the best parts of the movie. That ringing, silent, pulsing violence is used perfectly. Between that and the very legitimate, accurate, and pressed dialogue, there isn't a conversation that isn't important.

When you take those conversations and add the masterclass of acting, this movie becomes exceptional. My wife had a great statement about this portion of the movie. "The portrayal of the actors really makes you feel like you are there. You are stuck in the room with them, and it feels like it." There is a claustrophobia in the setting of just being stuck surrounded by the enemy and EVERYONE knows you are there.

As I was writing this, I had a thought. They put a LOT of emphasis on this movie being based on their memories. I feel like that is intended to basically allow A24 to mess with the story a bit, or it is contradictory to the official story. So take that as a food for thought.

My Rating

This only reason this isn't a 9 is the pacing. Because there is only one setting, it does at times feel stagnant. However, the payoff of seeing these young actors put on a show is there. This is an 8. Also, it being based on true story means it gets added to our Memorial Day movies.

Parental Rating

Hands down, Mom is out. There is immense violence and gore. Language throughout. The only thing there isn't a plethora of is sex. Not a bit of it. What this means though is that both my parents are out. There isn't a redeeming quality about it.
