Review

I loved this movie when it first came out. I was stationed in Camp Pendleton and going to Disneyland or California Adventures was something you did on the weekend. Well, at night California Adventures turned into a Rave during the release. They made drinks like in the movie that had a light up plastic ice cube that would make the drink flash and it was just very fun. Recently, my wife had to be in the area for a conference so we went and I was telling her about it. A "Cast Member" was walking past and said "I didn't think about one remembered that. It was my favorite change over."

One of the best things about this movie is the CGI. I ragged on Tron for how bad the CGI had aged in the 40 years. This movie is 16 years old and it looks better than quite a bit of what is coming out now, including movies like Disclosure Day which I saw this morning. It looks real and feels like there is weight to it, with the VERY notable exception of Jeff Bridges de-aging. That looks like garbage.

The story is interesting as it really does present the idea that we see in I, Robot or other sci-fi AI movies where the instructions you give AI matter. They will follow them forever. Clu works to create the perfect world based on what Flynn thought perfect was at that time. I think what really upsets me about the story is the amount of power that Flynn has, but never uses. He is able to create bombs, turn off power, etc, and you are telling me he didn't do this when Clu was targeting the ISOs?

My Rating

Like I said in the beginning, I did love this movie back then. Watching it now, there is a lot of entertainment value, but the acting is kind of dead. The lines are highly predictable, cliche, and honestly don't add a ton of depth. The bad guys, whether that is Clue or the motorcycle cop in the beginning are just dumb. The CGI, the action, and the design of the world do more to keep me involved that anything else. I think if the CGI was bad, we would never have gotten Tron Ares, which I will find out soon if we should have to begin with. I am giving Tron Legacy a 7.

Parental Rating

There is limited language, and because the violence is digital, there is no real harm here. I also think the the bond between a father and son is something that is appealing to both my parents from a rule perspective. I just don't think this is in my mom's preference which is fine. However, the rules make this a easy "Approved" by both them.
