Thor Ragnarok
This was my first experience with Taika Waititi and it was funny. I thought it was really well told story about redemption and really finding out who you are inside. I think that is something that the whole of Marvel Phase 3 really works on is pushing this idea that we are more than our name.
Synopsis
After the death of Odin, Hela returns wanting to conquer the entire universe. To stop her, Thor has to escape his imprisonment on Sakaar where he is a gladiator.
Review
This was my first experience with Taika Waititi and it was funny. I thought it was really well told story about redemption and really finding out who you are inside. I think that is something that the whole of Marvel Phase 3 really works on is pushing this idea that we are more than our name. We can make new decisions. This movie is the big start of that, where we see Thor make big decisions about others long before he considers himself.
There are some great fight scenes in this and some really weird ones. The Valkyries flying at Hela makes no sense for people who know how she fights and what her powers are. However, the Thor and Hulk fight is outstanding. There are some great fights along the rainbow bridge. Watching Heimdall just merc those zombie things is crazy. It really is one of my favorite parts.
The comedy is good, but it really does take too much of a scene. I also think there should be a note about the "I know him from work" joke came from a kid, and it is amazing. By far one of the best ones and I am so sad that it was spoiled in the trailers.
My Rating
I really think the acting is done well. People kind of rag on this, even more so in Thor Love and Thunder, but in this one it works so well. The pacing is solid throughout the movie. It flows well from one point to another point. It is a bright movie for something so heavy at times and when you combine that with the overused comedy, this movie quickly could be divisive. I was very entertained by it, so I am giving it an 8.
Parental Rating
There is some language, and quite a bit of drinking. It plays a bit of a story point so it isn't just a bit. The action isn't grotesque, so there are no real complaints about that. The main issue is really the content. There is no deep value or drama to bring my mom in, and I think it is just too cartoony for my dad. So I am going to say with all of that + the language and I think they are out. Rejected by both.
