Review

What kind of Shakespearean horror did I just watch? What a fantastic movie. The poetry and the language used does an excellent job of pulling you into their religious mindset. There is this compelling pattern and rhythm that keeps you engaged.

Form a horror aspect, you don't have a lot. This is more about mystery and creep, with shades of doubt and second guessing, than it is about demon and witches in the woods. Knowing that Robert Eggers does some weird horror movies like The Lighthouse, this one is honestly less weird and more in line with a period horror movie.

I have to give the entire cast a standing ovation. Ralph Ineson and Anya are so good. I am not sure what to say about it that I didn't already say, but I am just so impressed with their performances. There is a monologue that Anya gives to the twins to scare them that is just incredible. I could watch that over and over.

My Rating

You might come to this movie for the horror, but you stay for the Shakespeare. I never felt the creep that I was expecting from this movie, but damn it is good. There is maybe 10 minutes of heightened action and the movie doesn't feel like it needs more. The ending mystery doesn't feel like it needs to be explained. This was a fantastic movie. I am giving this a 9.

Parental Rating

There is very limited language, as it is a 1600's Puritan family. So other than "We are damned!" there isn't much. There is some nudity near the beginning and the end, but nothing more than you might see on TV honestly. I guess more than that on one scene, but most of that is in the background. There is some violence that is graphic, but never so much as to be the focal point. From a rules perspective, I think Dad approves, but the content has them both out the door. The supernatural isn't their thing. Rejected by both.
