Synopsis

After being shot by a former patient, a child psychologist trying to find his way back works with a young boy who has a secret.

Review

This movie came out 27 years ago and it is still outstanding. I can vividly remember when I first watched this and how scared I was when the kid turned around or when the girl throws up in the tent. Still just shocking moments.

It is movies like this that make horror movies feel real to me. That creep level that sits in the back of your mind. The concern for the characters. The way the ghost interact with the boy, even when he is helping them. There are just these layers of fear, thrill, and excellence in the craft that really sets the stage.

Now this is a movie with a great adult and kid duo. Bruce and Haley Joel are outstanding together, but better yet, they are outstanding alone. I am so impressed with how well Haley acted that it just reminds me that we need to protect Children in Hollywood.

My Rating

The beginning of M. Night Shyamalan, and him at his best. Between this and Signs, I can remember just the amount of story telling that went into these movies. It is a review of this movie that made me first see that media could be more than just what you see on the screen. The signs of red that help dictate the storytelling is still one of the best things I've seen. This is an easy 9.

Parental Rating

I watched this with my Parents when it came out. I remember my dad laughing when I walked out of the room after the throw up. My mom, if I remember correctly, said it was scary, but a good movie. However, that was probably 26 years ago. I think this might be one of the hardest movies I've had to decide for them since I have that knowledge. I think though, based on the rules, approved by Dad and rejected by Mom even with the language that is there.
