The Rock

This is easily one of the earliest movies I can remember loving. The chase sequence of the Hummer and Ferrari is still one of my favorites of all time. In fact, I still have models of both of those vehicles and have had them since I was a kid.

Synopsis

A group of Marines stage a mutiny by stealing deadly chemical weapons and taking over the prison, Alcatraz. An FBI agent and former prisoner and SAS member team up to stop them and remove the threat to San Francisco from the chemical weapons.

Review

This movie is excellent. There is a level of respect from the old warriors to each other, the arrogance of the young Marines, and finally the work of good men against corruption. This story is actually outstanding. After reading books like Operation Paperclip, I learned a lot about the chemical that this is based on/is. I think some symptoms are enhanced, but quite a bit of it is on par with the actual description.

The gun fights are very 80s, even for a mid-90s film. An unlimited number of bullets and just spraying over and over again. Back then, this scene was amazing. Even now, it is a cool scene, but it just is cheesy with how long it last. There is a line, "I'll take pleasure in gutting you boy," that I have had floating in my brain for the last 20 years.

My Rating

This movie is incredibly enjoyable. You get some conspiracy theory, some good fighting both gunplay and fist fights. There is also some good acting, but most of it just feel like crap honestly. Nick Cage is at the height of his weirdness I guess. I am giving this an 8 though. It is very entertaining and you would never regret watching it.

Parental Rating

For sure some language, one sex scene, and a lot of violence. Hard pass by Mom. This is also when "God dammit" was the highest form of constant swear words. While there are a couple f-bombs, in fact I am sure there is quite a few, it is the GD's that make my dad skip this movie now. Rejected by both.
