Trilogy Excerpts
Fellowship of the Ring <– Link to Review Here
This is a CLASSIC now. I can vividly remember watching this trilogy with my friend in an all nighter. Especially challenging after the extended versions showed up on DVD and Blu-ray. However, it is a great first movie. The issue is the length. It does get slow at times and for most people 3.5 hours is crazy. While I enjoy movies like this and Oppenheimer it doesn't really bother me, but I can understand people's issue. I am entertained.
The Two Towers <– Link to Review Here
The battle for Helm's Deep is one of the coolest scenes you will ever watch. I also appreciate the build up to it. The elves showing up, the break in fighting to show Frodo and Sam's journey are masterful in story telling and pacing. This movie is more storytelling than action and it is my least favorite of the three. Its slower, with peaks of action rather than the steady drum of the first one. It's good, its enjoyable, it's worth the watch.
The Return of the King <– Link to Review Here
While this is probably everyone's favorite, it is the SLOWEST of them all when watching the extended versions. However, it is also some of the best thematically. I enjoyed this movie. It did take me the longest to get through. It might be a conditioned response from the times of trying to marathon these movies and just crashing at the end of the night, but I never wanted to start the last hour of this movie.
My Rating
I said this in my first review that these movies are classics. They are still shown on TV in marathons and people are still talking about these and reviewing the cinematics, filming, writing from source material and acting. I think that people are so upset about the TV series because these movies followed the books so closely and the TV series is a departure from the love of these movies. When the next season is over, I will write a review, but having not read the books, the movies are excellent and the TV show is good as well. Overall, the movie series is an 8.
Parental Rating
This is a unique movie series that I know my parents wouldn't watch. While there is violence, generally is against non-humans which makes it easier for my mom to watch. My dad isn't against this series and based on the rules would approve, but this is so far outside his interest that still would say they both reject.
