The Karate Kid Part II

Synopsis

Daniel goes with Mr. Miyagi head to Okinawa to say farewell to his Dad. However, old grudges in his hometown have remained, and his return has brought them to the surface.

Review

This story is so much better and so well told. You get to have some more history of Mr. Miyagi and some additional layers to who is as a person. This makes it more enriching, more believable, and mainly more worthwhile watching.

The fighting is still terrible, but the lessons with the fighting are so much better. It still isn't anything crazy and honestly the fact that Daniel always gets kicked to the stomach and drops like a rock every time and doesn't try to get up is such a weird repetitive bit.

I will say that it is very interesting how they show the erasure of the Okinawan village. As soon as it came up, I knew what was going to happen, but it is a good way to show the post-war actions and how they affected people. I think that might be the better bit of deep lore here is how the morals of those in charge/owned things, played such a large part of where bases were built after WWII. Unrelated to the movie, but still sits there.

My Rating

I would watch this movie over The Karate Kid any day. The story itself makes more sense. There is weight to this that wasn't in the first one. You can feel the history and blending of tradition and modern culture. You also get a better love story both of the men. I enjoyed this movie, minus the fighting. I am going to give it an 8.

Parental Rating

The language is a lot less than that of the first movie. The violence is about the same. No sex. I think that my Mom would enjoy this. I know that doesn't make a lot of sense, but there is a storyline about putting aside differences to talk to family and friends. To fix things. My Dad, wouldn't enjoy the movie per se, but it fits in the rules. Approved by both.
