The Gentlemen

What an underrated, below the radar movie. It has done well enough to have a tv show named the same, which is what caused me to watch this movie to see if I wanted to see the TV show. I've seen this movie before and even years later still feel that it is a drag to get through.

Review

What an underrated, below the radar movie. It has done well enough to have a tv show named the same, which is what caused me to watch this movie to see if I wanted to see the TV show. I've seen this movie before and even years later still feel that it is a drag to get through.

This is a movie about a story being told from a selfish narrator. What I mean by that is that there are intentional lies, omissions, or just made up information. This story is told by my LEAST favorite actor, Hugh Grant. He is horrendous. Can't stand him and because of that, I get bored with him telling this story. Too much overture and not enough substance, until Charlie Hunnam tells the actual happenings in which case that is where it is interesting. What does

Guy Ritchie, I loved your work in The Covenant and wanted to go back and hope this was just as good, but it is more meta story than actual story. A story within a story with a story, etc. The main story is outstanding. Gangsters doing gangster things in the modern day. You are involved and interested in what is going on, but the back and forth is just tedious. Too many small details to keep track of for someone with a passing interest to pay attention too. Specifically, my wife made it about 30 minutes before she was bored. I think that is how I felt too the first time I watched, but managed to wake up for some outstanding scenes.

That is where this movie shines. Some of the scenes are perfect and Matthew McConaughey could put on a clinic for staying in character and making words count. There is a scene near the end where he puts on a show and you are enthralled with the message he is delivering. Between him and Charlie Hunnam, this is an outstanding movie.

My Rating

As much as I hate the presentation of the overall movie, it is solid. Cinematography, settings, story, and acting are so well done that the end of the movie justifies the slowness of the stretch. The pacing is well done and McConaughey should get an award for this. It is an 8 which should tell you something, because anyone who knows me knows that I blatantly refuses to watch a movie with Hugh Grant. It is a solid 8 with performances so well done all around.

Parental Rating

This is another one of those movies where there isn't a chance on this green earth that my parents would watch this. Language, sexual conversations and exposition, violence, and you have just scratched the surface of this movie. My dad would run for the hills with some of the language used, speaking that is more acceptable in the UK than it is here in the US. My mom is out because while this movie is about a man's love for his wife ultimately, the largest onion on earth doesn't have as many layers to get to that core as this movie. This is about gangster doing gangster stuff. Mom and Dad are out so rejected by both.
