The Exorcism of Emily Rose
This is one of the earliest horror movies I ever watched and for sure one of my favorites back in the day because it was based on a true story. However, watching it this time, I see where it is really a story of a story and it is "Inspired" by, not based on a true story.
Synopsis
Taking place in a series of look backs as a Priest goes on trial for the death of Emily Rose during her exorcism.
Review
This is one of the earliest horror movies I ever watched and for sure one of my favorites back in the day because it was based on a true story. However, watching it this time, I see where it is really a story of a story and it is "Inspired" by, not based on a true story. That is where people need to pay attention if you are watching this based on potential religious views.
I remember thinking that Jennifer Carpenter was going to go so far after this. She was in another horror film called Quarantine a couple years later, but hasn't really done much. However, it is her facial actions and screaming that when I watched it now I was so impressed with. She is the star of this show and I think everyone else was boring compared to it.
The story is interesting and I really like the framing of it via the trial. It feels like a supernatural Law and Order episode. What bothers me the most about the story itself is that we don't get a clear view of what happened in the exorcism. I am saying this with the idea that exorcisms match what I've seen in other ones or even in Constantine where we can see all the actions that lead up to something. It just feels like a missed story. Granted I know it was coming from the case files and not really from testimony so it makes sense.
My Rating
I am fighting a bit of cynicism with this as it feels like a Exorcism movie meant to do what the supposed real events did for the church. Bring people to the church. I also am curious how far this goes away from the source material as it does feel like it leans a lot into the author who wrote the book that inspired this movie. Look at this as just a movie, I am entertained. They do a decent job of adding that creep of needing to look over your shoulder at things. The screaming and actions from Jennifer are outstanding and when they do the intro to the demon, the effects they did on the Eyes were awesome. However, I it is a lack luster movie that I originally gave an 8 when I first recorded my number, but the more I think about it, that is too high. It is a 7.
Parental Rating
Demon and attacking the faith either way. Turning their love into a debate on mental health vs. real spiritual attacks and they are not going to be interested. There is limited language and no sex. The violence is more creepy that graphic, but still rejected by both.
