The Boondock Saints

Synopsis

Two Irish brothers have a religious calling that requires them to remove criminal elements from Boston by becoming the vigilante group "The Saints."

Review

This is a crazy cult classic movie. I can vividly remember first hearing about this at camp in middle school and being told it was awesome, but there was a lot going on. I also heard, maybe at that time and again later that the reason this never made it to theaters is that they actually did shoot a cat in the movie. This was before the internet was at it's peak. I have since seen that it was in theaters, only 5 across the entire country, and whether they killed a cat, no idea, and it is an Urban Legend that I do not care to correct it in my mind.

This isn't a great movie objectively. The story is pretty light, the dialogue is pretty bad, and Norman Reedus can't keep his accent straight to save his life. Which is part of the reason the shooting a cat feels real. His accent is completely gone. Then over the top on the final scene.

The action is where this movie is weirdly good. It is outrageous, but does a fantastic job of calling out how stupid it is at times. From the investigation in the dance club, to the original introduction Willem Dafoe's character.

My Rating

I love this movie. It is funny, it is full of action and stunts, and the story is weirdly good. Ok, not really, but it is entertaining which is what I want. The scores for this movie from the world are all over the place, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 26%, IMDB giving it a 7.6, and audience scores giving it a 91%. When I first watched this, I would have given it a 9, but it is an 8.
