Review
Can we talk about how a 1999 movie caused more physical fear than anything I have watched in years? Not because of the trees falling or the tents flying in the air, but because the claustrophobia. Oh my goodness that is such a good scene in the tunnel. And Heather Donahue is fantastic in her performance. Fighting the panic the is obviously rising, to make sure she could keep moving.
I am not sure if the bumper in the beginning saying the video was found in 2014 or something like that was there when the movie released, but I am not sure how people thought this was real if so speaking that was in the future. I can understand why people didn't want to go camping though. That for sure would have put people off of it. I remember it being a plot point in the later seasons of Boy Meets World after they bought the camping store.
As for acting, there honestly wasn't much acting. It felt most of the movie was them walking around. There was one dude who was just an ass the whole time, and he does more to cause issue than to help. So maybe that was his job, and it fit the story forcing the group to split.
My Rating
This is a 25-year-old movie and damn, is not better than a lot of horror movies we get these days. There is surprise, mystery, and fear throughout the movie for the characters and the audience. The biggest fault is in the cast that just doesn't do a good job of making me believe anything until the last 30-45 minutes of the movie and I can see why people didn't enjoy some of this movie year ago. I can't get over the tunnel scene, I genuinely had to take an extra breath to keep my own fear in check. That is worth a couple of points. This is an 8.
Parental Rating
Language and sexual conversations are pretty consistent. There are some graphic scenes, but most if it is the sound that is graphic, not the actual on screen activity. The exception is the worm. There is nothing here that would interest either parent, so rejected by both.
