The Beekeeper
This is an action movie with no substance that will bring you a lot of entertainment. John Wick meets Jason Bourne is the best description I can give you for Jason Statham in this movie. He is brutal and aggressive and its awesome. This is the "Bee"-rated version.
Synopsis
A retired "Beekeeper" works to protect the hive after his friend is scammed via an "anti-virus is out of date" scam which allowed them to steal all her money. "Evil is evil. Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same" (Quote from the The Witcher) is the oath he lives by.
Review
John Wick meets Jason Bourne is the best description I can give you for Jason Statham in this movie. He is brutal and aggressive and it's awesome. He does a great job of speaking very little like John Wick. This is the "Bee"-rated version. However, he is the highlight of this film, not that you would expect much else. Josh Hutcherson plays the character I see him as whenever I see his face. I see him as a tool. Every movie he plays the nice guy that really is just gaslighting everyone to serve his self-interest. This includes Hunger Games, but he will get a bit of a pass due to the brainwashing, but he very much guilted Katniss into the fight/love triangle thing they got into. She isn't a great human either, but I digress. The other character that is just STUPID, is the new "Beekeeper." This character dresses in outlandish, colorful, Matrix styled clothing and does a terrible job fighting Statham. She is pointless. The entire scene is pointless with her in it.
The story is CRAZY. While the initial catalyst does happen daily. $10 Billion is taken every year from internet scams. People will be tricked into giving up passwords, transfer money, and all sorts of other things. For an example of how this is done, see this video from John Oliver.
While you very much can see and believe that the President of the United States' Son would be using that for their own gain, this takes it a bit too far. There is no one this sniveling tool would be completely overlooked by the public, let alone the US Congress who didn't vote for the president.
The action was outstanding. I really see the training the went through, choreography, and the gun play. There are scenes throughout the movie where Clay, Jason Statham's character, makes conscience choices to not harm law enforcement, but will kill those that are exploiting others or getting rich off the scams. This small things goes to show the care and training they gave.
My Rating
This is an action movie with no substance that will bring you a lot of entertainment. While it would be outstanding on a plane, it is better than a plane movie. While I could walk away and not feel like I HAD to finish it right away, it was a very entertaining movie. It was fun to watch. It isn't great, but it is a 6.
Parental Rating
Lots of blood, language, and exploitation. There was no sex. I honestly would hope that my parents would watch this just to see how the scam works. It isn't out of pocket, it isn't a stretch, it is what happens to people all the time. There is a lot of gore and violence and for that my Mom is out. While there is a lot of language, I think my dad would enjoy it.
