This has got to the most basic TV show I've seen in a long time and is a miss for Apple TV in my opinion. The major issue story wise is that it just follows EVERY clique possible. From beginning to end. From dead-beat dads to Gen Z agendas.

Review

This has got to the most basic TV show I've seen in a long time and is a miss for Apple TV in my opinion. The major issue story wise is that it just follows EVERY clichΓ© possible. From beginning to end. From deadbeat dads to Gen Z agendas.

I don't say Gen Z agenda meaning that this show is "Woke" or whatever, I honestly appreciate that they see a different side of the world, I just think their, specifically the person in the story, delivery is atrocious. There is a character that when you first meet her is "I don't eat red meat since it is bad for the environment" and that is her entire personality. She pushes that for about 2 episodes and then that whole facade drops an episode later. To be honest, this character annoyed me for a couple of reasons. She was overly annoying in her presentation. From what she cared about to the way she manipulated the main character before the storied manipulation happened. She never owns up to her mistake, and while I believe her character cared for the golfer, I find their relationship more than inappropriate and creepy. The main kid is 17, and she is at least 21 as she is able to serve and order drinks throughout the show. I am not sure how Apple missed this.

I think the story is cute. There are a lot of life lessons and good advice for dealing with trauma and love-lost. How to move forward, and if you listen, there is a lesson about getting out of your own way.

In the vein that this show is overly predictable and clichΓ©, the final shot is a setup for a new season. IF this goes to a second season, which I don't think it needs, it will be this. Santi and Pryce training and go on the PGA Tour together. Or whatever the equivalent would be. The argument will be that Pryce isn't his coach anymore and the final episode will be Santi taking advice from Pryce or Pryce taking a piece of advice from the early episodes to win.

My Rating

I like Owen Wilson. Most of the time I find his comedy to be the right blend of sarcasm and real to make me forget that I am watching a TV show. This show however is basically a long form Happy Gilmore. Between is being almost the exact same plot filled with worse characters and a 21-year-old manipulating a 17 year, I want to give it a 5. However, the life lessons I talked about are really well presented, and it is well shot so I am going to give it a 6.

Parental Rating

Lots of language. Unnecessarily so. I say a lot of curse words, just go listen to any of the podcasts episodes like Episode 11 - The Last Of Us, but this was a lot. There was no sex or violence, so that works in its favor. There are a couple of scenes that depict real love that I think my mom would like though. I am not sure if it is enough for her to approve though. I am going to say rejected by both.
