Star Wars: Episode V - Empire Strikes Back

Synopsis

After the destruction of the Death Star the Rebel Alliance is being hunted. After an attack on the planet Hoth, the trio splits up with Luke looking to train with Yoda and Han/Leia fleeing the Empire who is stalking them the entire way.

Review

This is the slowest of the original trilogy in my opinion. There is just a lot of slower pace to this movie that really pulls me out of it.

Mark, Harrison, and Carrie are still excellent in this movie. However, I made a comment in the Blade Runner review about Harrison Ford's kissing just looking like he is eating an apple, and it made me think of this movie. His kiss with Carrie in the Millennium Falcon just feels weird. I think it might just be the time, but it is just feels and looks like he is eating something and not in a good way.

The lightsabers I think got an upgrade from the last movie. Specifically when they turn on the lightsabers. In Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope,
there was always a little jump cut when they were turned on. In this there wasn't, but it still shows up in some of the door closures.

The story is good even with knowing the big reveal, it still feels so well done. Actually, with knowing the reveal I am not sure this movie is as good as it was.

My Rating

I think this might be the movie that made me interested in Star Wars as a kid. It has so many solid scenes and a story that is easy to follow. The Falcon coming out of the asteroid worm thing is seared into my brain. However, as an adult who loves these movies it is just slow. There is a lot more conversation than the previous, and it isn't my favorite. I might be angering people with this, but it is a 7. Some iconic scenes, but that doesn't help the pacing.

Parental Rating

As with the last movie, I remember watching them with my parents and my whole family. There is just a solid vibe of goodness in this movie. No sex. Violence is there, but tame. Limited or zero language. What isn't there to like.
