Speak No Evil

Synopsis

A family visits a set of new friends for a whole weekend in the English Countryside. However, as the weekend continues, the lines between friendship stretch and break.

Review

This was a weird movie. It constantly gives you the feeling of being uncomfortable even with just the conversation that happens. There is a scene where the two ladies are fighting in front of the kids about the non-mother parenting the child and everyone knows that is just an awkward conversation.

James McAvoy is of course outstanding in his role. Also holy beefcakes, he is ripped. I feel like after Split, he just continued to get ripped and it evident in this movie. Honestly, I think the kids did a better job acting than some of the adults. MacKenzie Davis' character is honestly super annoying. Not because of her being vegetarian, but because she is portrayed as a victim the ENTIRE movie when really she is the one who instigates or doesn't say anything to support herself. The biggest for instance is when she is fed some meat and rather than just remind "Patty" that she doesn't eat meat, she eats it and then spits it out. Just say something.

The setting of the movie and the action are pretty good. I enjoyed the feel the house they were in and really enjoyed the overall story due to its plausibility. It very much feels like something that could happen with adults not having the same friend groups that older generations in America have.

My Rating

So the reviews of this movie vary widely. Some give it a 6/60 and others in the 8/80 range. When I first started writing this I was in the realm of of a 7, but as this has been a couple days due to work travel, I think the 8 is pretty accurate. That feeling creepiness and awkwardness just lingers and that is something that you don't get in most horror/thriller movies. So I am going to say 8.

Parental Rating

Intense violence and blood/gore. Language runnith over and it isn't just British language, and one scene of suggested sex acts and talks about different thing in that line. I think the language would be hard for my dad to get over and the violence would be hard for my mom to get over so I am going to say rejected by both.
