Review

I remember watching this movie years ago. The prime of M. Night Shyamalan. He came out swinging with this after The Sixth Sense. I really enjoy this movie, however, I do not believe that it fits into the "Horror" genre. It is for sure more thriller, and we also tap into the theme of "everything happens for a reason" or the providence of God just like The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

The story is good. I really like the brotherly interactions between Mel and Jauquin. There is an early scene where Mel's character is chasing someone down and he says to his brother, "I cursed" and it is just funny. It is these simple stories that make this movie feel more grounded than most other alien invasion movies do. Alien and that whole series is so futuristic that you don't feel like it can hurt you. However, the fighting in their home does add more to it.

The layering of events from the beginning to the end is what I have always loved about M's movies. The red in Sixth Sense, the green here, the yellow in The Village. Take that, and you add in the other oddities that end up being a great connection to the end of the movie and help explain what is going on. This is a great film to see that more openly than having to remember after the fact.

My Rating

I have watched this a lot. So none of the scenes that are supposed to be jump scenes surprise me. I remember watching this and being so scared and excited when it first came out, and I would love to feel that again. This movie thought does hold up. The CGI of the alien when we finally see the full form is a little obvious, but I don't remember feeling that way the first time. This is an 8 of a movie. Simple and solid.

Parental Rating

There is very limited swearing, and the whole movie is about being with family after tragedy. While there are some scenes that my mom wouldn't enjoy, it fits the bill for making it a movie she would approve of. Approved by both, which I think also is another nail to say that this isn't a "Horror" movie.
