Review
There are some stellar action and acting here. There is also some terrible acting. I am honestly really surprised by the limited amount of people who can say they enjoyed the movie, because people love high octane movies and this is one of them. At the same time, I can see the argument for it being terrible.
The weak points in this movie are the writing and Mireille Enos. After watching this the first time, I have NEVER liked her. She was so over the top the entire movie, and she is what takes you away and makes you wonder, "How the hell did these people get hired?" From a story perspective her erratic behavior makes sense. It is the way they wrote her and the "I'm just as much of a man as you are" mentality that really pushes it too far. Much like what's her name in Lioness who messed up 2 missions because she couldn't keep her libido in check while on a mission, Enos's character can't stop trying to one up everyone else to prove her space.
The overall story as one of the better, non-telegraphed, twist that I've ever seen. I know what happens, and I looked for the breadcrumbs and never saw any. So that could be a good thing, but I also think it means that the story is incomplete. This hour and a half movie always has a feeling that something is missing and maybe that is it, the lack of foretelling, but there is more to it as well.
My Rating
One of my favorite things about this movie is the side by side story telling in the same scene, but taking place in two different times. It is something that I don't really see done well too often and this does it well enough that you are not sure it isn't happening at the same time. The weapon tactics and high testosterone levels in this movie are what you would expect, but that is taken down by, while accurate, and overwhelming amount of gore that could have been toned down. There are whole sections of the "investigation" that aren't needed and serve as red herrings for both the audience and the characters, but the story isn't long enough for anyone to care. I think that the low scores for this movie really focus on the prominence of Enos and her just over the top everything. If you can look beyond that, you have a decent action movie that is just that action. For that, I am giving this a 7, knowing I have a higher tolerance for violence than a lot of other people.
Parental Rating
Extreme violence, gore, nudity, language, and everything else that would make my parents never push play. In the first 5 minutes there is a scene with drugs and sex, well almost sex, and with that there is a ton of language. I do not think they would even entertain this beyond that scene. Rejected by both with prejudice.
