Rebel Moon Part 1

I know I might be among the few that feel that way about his movies, they are in the purely entertaining bracket of movies, but there is no substance. This movie is the perfect example of style over substance in movies. Part of that I think that is the pull from EVERY single sci-fi movie ever.

Rebel Moon Part 1

Synopsis

A small village on a planet is targeted by the ruling people because they provided support to the rebels. That planet however, has someone that isn't about to let them push their people to the brink of extinction.

Review

This movie is more Zack Snyder than any other Zack Snyder film ever. Lots of slo-mo for no reason. Big sweeping fight scene with contact that makes no sense. A half-assed story that is told for so long you lose any patience or care for the movie.

I know I might be among the few that feel that way about his movies, they are in the purely entertaining bracket of movies, but there is no substance. This movie is the perfect example of style over substance in movies. Part of that I think that is the pull from EVERY single sci-fi movie ever. There is a hippogriff that you have to bow to before it stops trying to kill you, i.e., Harry Potter Movie Series. There is a Nazi style tyrannical force that is in control of all the planets like in Star Wars Skywalker Movie Series. We have a prophecy that is weird and pushed aside very quickly like Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace. I am sure there are more, but that is the biggest issue with this movie. It has no identify by itself.

The main character, is magically the best fighter of all time and manages to never get hit unless it is out of outright stupidity, and sometimes not even that. She runs head first into gun fire and never gets hit multiple times. There is also a scene where she is saved by a robot that previously said they couldn't fight or pick up weapons, and then we really see it again. The story in an of itself makes so little sense. I think they were trying to give this character a redemption arc, but it just happened to late in the game. They piece meal her story so slowly that it takes a dude 5 sentences in the final fight to explain who everyone in her group is.

I actually just thought about something. There is a scene where this dude does a running leap with a spear, and it is straight out of 300 which is the best Zack Snyder film and this is basically a sci-fi copy of it.

My Rating

I will say that it is rare that I worry about movie ratings personally. However, if this had be R, it would have been so much better. Just the fighting felt like they were cutting to a different camera angle for each impact so you couldn't see them not actually fighting. It took away a lot of the weight behind it. The movie is frustrating, but still entertaining a bit. I will watch Rebel Moon - Part Two The Scargiver, and the final movie in the trio when it comes out just to watch this car crash, but it will only be on planes. I am giving this a 6.

Parental Rating

There is a scene that spends way to long on the planning of a rape to make this watchable for any parent with younger kids, even 13-year-olds. It is vile. For that alone, my Mom is out faster than the devil on Holy Ground. While my Dad would be upset by it, he would still watch it. This is light on the heavy language and heavy on the light fighting. Rejected by Mom, approved by Dad.
