Project Hail Mary Movie
I have to give huge props, pun intended, to the puppeteer and voice of Rocky. That element being real rather than straight CGI the entire time allows for me to feel like I am there which is EXACTLY what I believe movies are for. To pull you into that reality and story, away from real life.
Synopsis
A science teacher wakes up alone and no memory of how he got there. As time goes on, he learns that he was sent to stop a substance that is killing the Earth's sun.
Review
If you have read my review of the book, Project Hail Mary, you'll know that I have known since 2021 that Ryan Gosling was going to play this character. I had a lot of concern about him playing Rylan Grace. He just didn't fit in my mind. However, in the last couple of years, he has done some roles that gave me and hope. I can confirm that he was outstanding. I cannot express how good of a job he does in playing a person trying to learn who he is, what is going on, and what the mission is.
The relationship between Grace and Eva Stratt, Sandra HΓΌller's character, in the book was great. A lot of give and take. However, in the movie it is really taken up a notch. You get to see a relationship built on respect and trust, that I do believe turns into a loving relationship. There is a karaoke scene and the look that Gosling gives to HΓΌller conveys so much more than I got from the book and really speaks to their ability to tell a story with just facial expressions.
I have to give huge props, pun intended, to the puppeteer and voice of Rocky. That element being real rather than straight CGI the entire time allows for me to feel like I am there which is EXACTLY what I believe movies are for. To pull you into that reality and story, away from real life.
My Rating
I love this movie so much that I can confidently say that it is an almost perfect representation of the book, much like The Martian. There are parts that are left out, such as why Grace was selected as a backup, and the science is dumbed down, but it has to be. However, the story is told beautifully. It is visually stunning at time and I love the practical set they made for the ship. It was incredible. I am giving this a 10, which might be the first 10 movie I have given.
Parental Rating
Language is light. There is no sex. No violence. The comedy is so funny with just the right amount of slapstick. I can find no reason why my parents wouldn't watch this and thoroughly enjoy it. Approved by both. Amaze Amaze Amaze.
