Pitch Perfect 2

Synopsis

After a catastrophic wardrobe malfunction in front the President, the are banned from the collegiate competition circuit. In order to get back into it, the work to win the World a capella competition.

Review

As are most sequels, this one falls flat on its face at times. From poor characters, cliches, and a story that starts out stupid and ends as stupid. I like Hailee Steinfeld in [[Sinners]] and [[Hawkeye]], but this isn't her best film. Specifically I think it is the writing. They tried to make her a female Benji and just pushed her to be ackward rather than passionate. Benji in [[Pitch Perfect]] loved [[Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope|Star Wars]] and magic. Emily, just doesn't have a sense of who she is supposed to be. No one's life goal is to join an a capella group. Unless you are the equivalent of the high school football captain that still talks about it.

I do appreciate that it felt like they tried to share the spotlight a bit more between all the characters/actresses. It was really fun to see Hana Mae Lee really get some time because she is so wild that it just makes you laugh. There is a scene where they are in a tent together and she licks Anna Kendrick's nose and I applaud her for not laughing. Between her and Rebel Wilson, it is just stupid funny. I mean that as the jokes are low brow, but funny.

The story is really where you lose me. They for sure where not as good as DSM, they "didn't find their sound," if they did it was the same sound they had earlier. It just felt lazy.

My Rating

I chuckled the entire movie. It silly and that makes it entertaining. It isn't super good, isn't nearly as good story structure wise as the first one, and just relies on the lorals of it to succeed. I am giving this a 7, mainly because that is what my wife said it should be and I am entertained by it.

Parental Rating

A lot more sexual references. Roughly the same amount of language. Still no nudity, I mean it is PG-13 so that makes sense. I am going to say approved by Mom and rejected by Dad. Mainly, because Mom likes to watch her Grandkids sing so this would be a fun way for them to bond.
