Paranormal Activity 2
The scares are turned up just one, but are mostly just laterals of what we saw in the first movie. The moving the people was crazy awesome, and the cast playing into that was so good. The explosion in the kitchen has always been a crazy scene.
Synopsis
Providing more background to Paranormal Activity, the sister of Katie is having similar paranormal issues, and break-ins where nothing is missing. As time goes on, they realize the activity is focused on their new son, Hunter.
Review
This was much more full in the story aspect. We learn so much more about Katie and her sister, plus the events that happened to them when they were young. It isn't ever fully described, but we get to see the lead up to the events to Paranormal Activity and what happened afterward.
I remember watching this in theaters and the amount of panic you could feel since this deals with a child was wild. I think that is part of the reason that you see a lower score as well as lower box office numbers. People want to be scared, but they don't want it to focus on the kids or the animals. Speaking of that, they did an outstanding job of using the kids natural kind of movement and discovery as a means to introduce fear. There is a scene where he just wants to look in the closet, and you don't think anything of it, but that rumbling sound design implies that he can see something we/the cast can't.
The scares are turned up just one, but are mostly just laterals of what we saw in the first movie. The moving the people was crazy awesome, and the cast playing into that was so good. The explosion in the kitchen has always been a crazy scene. I mentioned it in Poltergeist about it being that homage to changing of the chairs, but this has always been on steroids.
My Rating
The story here isn't that much different from the other one. Still told in this found footage/security camera footage. There are some events that seem absolutely wild from a human perspective where you just don't expect it to go. Overall, this doesn't really change much, but it does expand the Paranormal Activity Universe and sets up the next film by creating a mystery and interest into what was going on. However, the repeat actions from plot to plot means that it does feel very meh. This is a 7.
Parental Rating
Same demon, same issues. Both of them are out, but there is also more language and sexual conversation this time. Rejected by both.
