Nosferatu
Take that and add in the monumental performance from Lily-Rose Depp and you have an almost masterpiece. The way she moves her body and changes her voice you can see is real without much enhancement or any at all. The transition from her character to the possessed is incredible.
Synopsis
A retelling of the story of the Vampire, Nosferatu, and his haunting of a city and his infatuation with a newly married woman.
Review
I think people have missed the point of this movie. It shot wonderfully, directed well, and then you have a cast that goes above and beyond. I think that people are expecting more Blade or Twilight in this vampire story, then they should expect the dark and grittiness of gothic Europe where it came from.
We have to start with some of the very cool practical effects that were done. There is a scene where Nosferatu's hand stretches across the city, but it comes gliding from his actual hand. I know the made a miniature version and had him run his hand over it with a light casting down, but with the scene in black and white, you get the sense of terror that will come down on them. You also have Bill Skarsguard, who naturally is imposing as you see him in John Wick Chapter 4, It, and Atomic Blonde, but then you add the makeup and transformation on him and you cannot see him. You see this veiny old dude who's breath shudders and quakes with age. You get this husk of a man and it is incredible.
Take that and add in the monumental performance from Lily-Rose Depp and you have an almost masterpiece. The way she moves her body and changes her voice you can see is real without much enhancement or any at all. The transition from her character to the possessed is incredible. She is why you should watch this movie alone.
Random note, not really related to this movie specifically, but Willem Defoe might be Virgil in his late acting career. Each of his characters all come as a guiding presence for those around him. This he plays the occult professor, in The Lighthouse he plays the mentor, in John Wick he plays the man keeping balance. All of them reminding those around him to keep their wits about them and not to do something foolish.
My Rating
This movie amazed me in 2024 which I saw it in theaters. When I watched it this time, some of the drama was lost as I watch it on a laptop, which I don't think I have ever noticed before. I think it is because of those practical effects that it became more noticeable, so I recommend watching this on a TV with the sound up. I really enjoyed watching it again and it is easily one of my favorite movies, even though it is a bit slow. I'd give this a 9.
Parental Rating
There is a lot of nudity and blood. Not just like gunshot blood, but blood being sucked, running down bodies and out of eyes. That means Mom is out so fast. I don't remember any harsh language so I think based on the rules, my Dad would be in. So approved by Dad and rejected by Mom.
