Mortal Kombat II

Synopsis

The champions of earth are once again the target of invasion by Shao Kahn. With the murder to one of them, Jonny Cage joins the fray where the rules are being bent.

Review

I'm not sure what I expected, but seeing a movie like this get funded is probably not it. I had to go back and look at my review of Mortal Kombat and see what I thought about this because this was not a good movie. It looks like one of the fan fiction movies that would have come out after the first one in the reboot.

Let's start with the acting/writing. I legit felt like I was the 90s of Mortal Kombat. They even call it out with "No one wants to see an old man doing karate poses" when that is all he does. There is even this over the top choreography moment between Johnny and Baraka that looks more like a dance. The entire thing really does feel like I'm watching The Karate Kid with it's you kick here, and I'll put a block here. The story just feels more scripted than a high school musical where everything works out. The same move is used to "kill" Shao Kahn 4 times.

I will say, that faithfulness to the game and it's attacks/fatalities is really cool. I haven't played the games in a long long time, so it was very nostalgic. The scenes for the fights also were things that I remembered from the early games and that is some love to the fans.

My Rating

This is a terrible movie. It is cheesy, boring, and a bad look for the cast. I think the only person who seems like he fits is Ludi Lin as Liu Kang. I am not sure why the rest of them bother me when they are exactly like the characters from the games, and so it has to be the writing. Likewise, I just can't get behind this movie. I think part of the problem is the plot armor given to people over and over in this movie were taken away immediately in this one and given to other people. What killed one person doesn't kill another. The only thing I enjoyed about this on the plane was the nostalgia. What a waste of time. It's a 4.

Parental Rating

I wasn't kidding when I said fanfic type movie. The blood is all CGI and just thrown everywhere to the point that it might be AI. There is a ton of language too, that just feels like they were saying it to say it. No like The Boondock Saints where we get 10 different versions of the F word. For those two reasons alone, this is rejected by both.
