Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning

I hope that Tom Cruise as Ethan is done, at least as the primary character. At this point I am cool with them rebooting it or doing a new generation. If they were to reboot, I am not sure who would replace them that would be able to insist on the realism that we have gotten for the last 10 years

Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning

Synopsis

The Entity has pushed the world to the edge. Governments all around the world are looking for Ethan and a way to stop the Entity as it gains control over the nuclear arsenals. Either Hunt stops it, or the world is pushed to a nuclear winter.

Review

So the other hosts and I were talking about this movie after it came out in theaters. There is a solid chunk of the movie, about 45 minutes or so, that recaps the ENTIRE Mission Impossible series as well as drags its feet to set up this movie. When I was watching it to write this review, I clocked it at about 43 minutes before the movie really started. For a 2.5 - 3-hour movie, that is a huge chunk of time. Especially when it feels like a waste.

I will say that the action is good. I really enjoyed new hunt and the weaving of old items all the way back to Mission Impossible. Honestly, I appreciate the perspective of the guy at the listening station the most. His career was over, but looking back 30 years he was able to see that it was a good life. A life that was made better. That is something that I hope as the wheels of fate turn, I am able to keep first and foremost in my mind.

The action is very fun. Thinking back to it, there is only one scene that pulls you from reality if you have even an inkling of knowledge. That is the sub scene where he is free diving. Without giving too much away, Ethan has to pull off his oxygen mask, and I am 90% sure is lower than the world record for a free dive. There for sure are other factors going into this such as the cold water and him only have to go UP without new oxygen. All of that in mind, I think it is outside the realm of real and it just feels a bit distracting.

My Rating

I hope that Tom Cruise as Ethan is done, at least as the primary character. At this point I am cool with them rebooting it or doing a new generation. If they were to reboot, I am not sure who would replace them that would be able to insist on the realism that we have gotten for the last 10 years of Mission Impossible. As for a final movie, that intro really hurts it for me. It's too long, too slow, and most people do not need a recap of ten movies or whatever to get into this movie. If the beginning wasn't the way it was, it could easily be a 10. But they made it that way, and it is an 8. This doesn't reflect that I am still upset about what they did to Ilsa in Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning.

Parental Rating

The most intense intimate scene in the series I think. Two people making out on the ice. Limited language, which I think is a point in the industry, that hard language isn't needed with good written dialogue. The blood and gore is also limited to story beats with a relatively intense minor surgery scene. Based on the rules, I think my dad approves, and Mom rejects. Just no family value in this.
