Mission Impossible III

Synopsis

Ethan is thrown into a conflict after he has left the field for love. His protégé is killed and now his fiancée's life has been threatened by the world's most proficient arms dealer.

Review

We are back on track with a good spy thriller. There is conflict, surprise, and really good action. The most memorable scene is where Ethan is escorting a prisoner over a long bridge and it is attacked. While some of the actions for sure are there to be over the top, but make it entertaining.

I actually also like Ethan's love interest. It feels much more natural when compared to Mission Impossible II which very much felt like it was a wanna be James Bond. I also really appreciate the reality of who she was. She has no knowledge of Ethan's life and work, but he back story has enough layers in it that some of her actions late in the movie make sense. Also Michelle Monaghan's acting with Tom really works well.

Ving also has been toned down. He doesn't have the overset outfits or anything like that. We also get to see his friendship with Ethan grow a lot. There is a real friendship there that is fun to see. We also get to see my favorite parts of the Mission Impossible Series, Simon Pegg. He just really fits even for the time that he is on screen.

I just realized that JJ Abrams directed this and I do typically enjoy his work. Also explains some of the lens flaring that happened for no reason.

My Rating

While the interactions between characters are the best part of the story. The story itself is the very first plot whole that we see in the whole series that doesn't even get explained away. In fact it just gets a line at the end that basically says "If I told you, I'd have to kill you." I don't mind the story, but it isn't the greatest. Overall, this is a 7 as there is a lot of potential and setup in this movie for what is to come.

Parental Rating

This movie has a lot less blood than the previous ones and I think the same amount of language and sex. I think because of the relationship between Ethan and his paramour, you might actually get my mom interested. I also think in general my dad would be interested over all. I am going to go out on a limb and say approved by both.
