Lost Women of Alaska
There is a lot of things that happen in the United States that we don't know about. This is one of those things unless you are part of that community. This documentary tells a crazy story that is so sad.
Synopsis
The police department is provided an SD card that show a snuff film leading to a bizarre story about a serial killer targeting marginalized Native women.
Review
This is punishing to watch. When I was in the Marines, I had the privilege of serving with Native's from Alaska, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, and probably more. It is the one from Idaho that I first learned about the targeting of Native women. This documentary does a great job of explaining the situation that allows for it, as well as presenting the scenario in which these ladies were taken.
The presentation of the evidence makes it clear exactly why the man did what he did. It was the people around him that astound me and more importantly, the police not being able to act on the evidence either from bad evidence or needing a clear line of evidence. I know that there might need to be more investigation that needs to happen in documentaries, but the dude confesses to multitude of things, so no need to explain all the other people they looked into.
My Rating
After watching this, I immediately was brought back to a conversation I had with the Native from Idaho. It is incredibly sad and disheartening that this can happen so much without check. I think Wind River (Haven't watched in years, up on the list soon), while a different story, tells a very direct and legitimate story. This investigation and documentary is something that shows the amount of care people have, and the amount of work that police officers have to do to get a very direct confession. It is hard to give a rating to this, knowing what was presented. I am going to give it an 8.
Parental Rating
They do a good job of blurring the violence that was provided, the language that was recorded, but it is violent content throughout. I don't think Mom or Dad will like the content. I can't in good conscience say approved by either of them. I know they aren't big documentary people either so I have to say rejected by both.
