Review

I am not sure what this movie was supposed to be. I don't think the story makes sense from beginning to end. I think the acting by the adult is terrible, and the scary elements fall more into the gross element rather than actually scary like The Substance. Let us start with some story elements.

First, there are two major issues within the first 30 minutes. First, when they are given their daughter back to the US from Egypt, how do they get her home? The parents are obviously not very well off based on their jobs, so did they fly coach? Did she not make any noise on the plane? Did she not fight security or customs? I know it typically wouldn't be a big deal, but they make a show of weird things happening to the girl before they leave Egypt. Secondly, my question is how NO ONE asked why she didn't age in 8 years. The Grandmother made a bunch of cakes for pivotal birthdays, but she didn't age, and it is just ignored.

Moving on to the acting, Dad sucks. Jack Reynor is so frustratingly bland just like he is in Midsommar. The same blank face and stare for parts where as a dad he should be moving. One of the big questions that should have been asked is "Is it ok to bring this volatile person home to our other 2 kids?" Naw, he just does nothing, putting his entire family at risk. The mom isn't much better in my opinion. She is choosing to be blind to the problems. So maybe there is something there about guilt making people be dumb. I am not sure.

Some potential spoilers in this next section. Why don't they just light the mummy on fire? Why don't they drop it in the middle of the ocean? I feel like there are a lot of things that could have been done other than what happens.

My Rating

There is this weird eating dysmorphia in this movie. I don't think it adds much to the movie, but it is there. The beetles and scorpions, make sense, the rest, not so much. The kids and the detective were very good. The girl that plays the mummy is outstanding in her body and face movement. The detective having to modify her voice due to what happens is such a cool element. The story is disjointed at best and has some very big plot holes that really hurt the movie overall. I am giving this a 6.

Parental Rating

This is a movie that would never be in their wheelhouse. From the possession type story line, the disturbing eating elements, and the general horror elements mean they are out so fast. There is a lot of language, so much so that Dad is out. There is a ton of violence, so Mom is out. Rejected by both.
