Knives Out
That is something else this movie does really well. Provides an excellent story where there is no real wasted portion of the movie. Every single scene is brought back to show either some clue that we missed watching it or some additional symbolism
Synopsis
The death of a wealthy book publisher and subsequent passing of their fortune to the publisher's nurse throws an already fractious family into hysterics. However, a southern detective believes there is more afoot and investigates.
Review
I love movies that have large cast of star studded power and they play more behind the scene parts. I mean Jamie Lee Curtis is EXECELLENT in what she does and she isn't the main character. The entire Blanc movie series to include Glass Onion and this are full of individuals that are just outstanding, but hiding in the back. At the same time, there is no real small part in these movies. There are two kids, college age, in this movie and they don't say much, but they provide some pivotal plot movement.
That is something else this movie does really well. Provides an excellent story where there is no real wasted portion of the movie. Every single scene is brought back to show either some clue that we missed watching it or some additional symbolism that is lost until the big reveal. With a small shooting location, everything could be practical and that makes for such creative story telling that this is what most movies should replicate.
Going back to the cast real quick, Chris Evans is woefully underrated. We all picture him as Captain America or at least Captain America-esq from his roles in Gifted and Push, but he is an outstanding, minor spoiler ahead, bad guy. I am about to rewatch one of my favorite movies with him being the bad guy, just because of this movie.
My Rating
This movie is funny, smart, and has excellent twist and turns that unless you've read the books or watched this movie before, you'd never see it coming. That to me is the best part. Not being able to predict the minutia of the movie which typically you can. To see the larger story beats, sure, nothing is new these days. This is an easy 8 and my wife watched this 2 hour movie the entire way.
Parental Rating
Minimal blood and language and no sex. There is a scene with some vomit which is gross, but it isn't over the top. The movie isn't about family in the way that my mom would typically go for, but it is about doing the right thing and the act of not lying. I am going to say approved by both as this movie is entertaining and there are minimal things that would push them away.
