They probably enjoyed me and my brothers watching it as kids, but not now without the grandkids. There is a decent amount of intended language with other words thrown in to replace them. Home Alone

Synopsis

Review

This is a classic Christmas movie. I recently saw Macauley say that this isn't a Christmas movie, it just takes place around Christmas and Home Alone 2 is a Christmas movie; he couldn't be more wrong on the first part. This is absolutely a Christmas movie. Trees, decorations, and changing of hearts, it is almost a Hallmark movie.

Watching this as an adult, there are so many things wrong with the way the family treats Kevin. However, if you shift your perspective to that of everything where people are speaking straight to the camera as being from an 8-year old, you can see that the words they say might now be what was actually said. Kind of an unreliable narrator story. This makes the movie much more digestible.

The acting is fine. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are probably the best part of this movie and I will die on that hill. I know Macauley is around 8 when this was filmed, but I now know why my Dad didn't like watching it with us when I was younger.

The slapstick is still amazing. I chuckled throughout the movie and just loved the exhuberance of it. It really is well done and very inventive. Makes the movie fun for sure.

My Rating

As a kid, this was my favorite Christmas movie. Would watch it every year. laughing the whole way through. As an adult, I enjoy it, but I am not the intended audience. Even still, I think the ending is well done and gives some closure to the story as a whole, but I think the beginning is a setup for the worst parents with the most suspicious work history ever. I am going to give this an 8. Still a good movie and the humor is still there.

Parental Rating

Neither of my parents are big on this movie. They probably enjoyed me and my brothers watching it as kids, but not now without the grandkids. There is a decent amount of intended language with other words thrown in to replace them. I say it that way because when I was little the "What the Freak" statement was popular and I said it one time in Home Depot and my mom lost her mind at me and said I should just say the F word since it was the same thing. So replacements don't count as not having language. The violence is more for the gag than actual and it is about family. I think based on the rules, Mom would approve and I think Dad is on the edge, but there is nothing that outright would make him reject it. So approved by both.
