Synopsis

A boyfriend and girlfriend are headed to her hometown to meet her parents and surprise them of their engagement. However, Simon is white, and the family doesn't know.

Review

This is a great Rom Com. Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher are hilarious together when just trading back handed comments or attempting to teach each other new things.

For a simple movie with a simple story, the predictability doesn't change how well it is executed. You know that Dad is going to find a reason to not like him, share it with the girlfriend, and then the boyfriend will work to get back into the good graces. This makes them work together to get things right after Dad's plan backfires. Simple, but they have structured this story so well that you really enjoy it the whole way through.

All the main cast, Zoe, Bernie, Ashton, and Judith, are absolutely amazing in this movie. Hal Williams, the grandfather is hilarious and there seems to be some family chemistry in this movie that you can feel the entire way though.

What hurts the movie is that it is a little on the nose for the stereotypes. This is a remake of a movie from long ago, and that might have required them to make some changes to fit current cultures, but it was just too forced at times.

My Rating

This is one of the few movies that critics and audiences seem to agree on. It is ok. I think the scores provided are a little low at 41%/49% for rotten tomatoes and 5.9 for IMDB, but the IMDB score isn't far off. I laughed at this movie. My wife watching it over my shoulder at times, laughed at the movie. Its lighthearted and funny. It is a 7. Nothing crazy, but entertaining to watch.

Parental Rating

There is no nudity, but quite a few sexual references. There is a decent amount of language, especially of the "God Damn" variety. No blood or gore or drugs. I think that my mom would approve and my dad reject. It's a simple funny movie with some language that would make my dad run.
