Synopsis

A series of monsters is rising to the surface after eons underground. However, their rise calls an even more ancient monster to create balance.

Review

Can we start with the conversation about this cast being excellent and somehow critics hated it? People love it, as they should, but critics have lost their mind. Big monster fighting will always be a fun watch.

The story works for something so simple honestly. History repeating itself and a cover-up is what makes the situation far worse than it would have been. Would the monsters still have shown up? Yes. However, it could have been better handled. The military honestly makes some stupid decisions making guesses not backed by any of the known science at the time. I mean technically based on the pictures, they dropped a hydrogen bomb on Godzilla and it did nothing. Not the Kiloton nukes that were dropped on Japan. I am basing this on the Bikini Atoll pictures which is where they dropped the hydrogen bombs to testing.

I forgot that Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olson were in this movie. They do a decent job with Elizabeth being the stand-out between the two. Bryan Cranston is also spectacular, and I wish we got more of him.

The action is actually really good. The monster fighting is so good. Feels really authentic and the nuclear breath is awesome.

My Rating

I really enjoyed this movie. It isn't great in the 9 or 10 range, but it is a good, solid 8. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is as good as he is in other movies. Not great. Not bad. He is my weak point. I should be fair, the writing for his EOD character is my weak point. However, I still enjoy it and would go watch it again. I mean I did for the 3rd or 4th time since its release.

Parental Rating

Honestly, this is a movie that while the content is for sure outside my mom's normal viewing pleasure. However, this dude is working to get back to his family and helps others. The language is limited, there is no sex, and there is limited actual violence that is visible. I don't think monster-on-monster violence will bother my mom. I am going to say approved by both.
