Echo Burning

This is much like Tripwire where there is a large level is just basic writing. I know we have a formula for this series, but this one I was so angry at because it was so obvious to the reader that Reacher wasn't playing with a full deck of cards. We can blame it on the Texas heat.

Brief Review

This is much like Tripwire where there is a large level is just basic writing. I know we have a formula for this series, but this one I was so angry at because it was so obvious to the reader that Reacher wasn't playing with a full deck of cards. We can blame it on the Texas heat.

Why I Read this book

I have really enjoyed the series overall and Reacher season 3 has recently finished so I grabbed this book early.

In-Depth Review (Favorite Quotes)

I know that Reacher is very much the chivalrous dude when it comes to random women in these books, but this one is a bit over the top. Who just decides to stay with some random lady whose husband is returning from jail in a couple of days. I understand that she is victim of domestic violence, but the level of drama he put himself in rather than walking away is outrageous.

The story overall is good. I like the idea of sins coming back to the surface because people can't keep their mouth shut or are trying to have leverage on another. What does bother me about the story is just the level of interconnectivity between nobodies to the original crime. Also, how did the main bad buy know how to contact the hit team (That isn't a spoiler as the hit team takes place early in the book).

Actually now that I think about it, there are a couple of questions that I have that were either just throw away items or just overall left for the either. One of the points in the book that Reacher makes is that no one hitchhikes anymore and that he needs to stop doing it since this hitchhike turned into a mess. What does he do at the end of the book? Walks the highway in the middle of the heat to hitchhike out like he is riding a horse into the sunset. He could have taken a bus for Pete's sake.

As for the arrogance I mentioned earlier. A lot of the book is him saying either to someone or even himself, "I was an investigator for over 10 years. A pretty damn good one." Between that and him knowing what a hit squad would do since "he used to do that" it just bleeds this arrogance that makes him a less likable character than where we started.

Rating

I will say that I loved Killing Floor, the first book, since that was the first season of Reacher. They were very well done to tell the same story and I think the book series much like the second season of the show, has just fallen away. It is starting to fall into the range of unbelievable rather than things falling into place. There are just leaps in judgement in this book that are in his mind without evidence because he knows. The action scene are really good, while some items are pure luck and I guess COULD happen, that isn't the issue overall. This book is a 7. Maybe a 6, but since Reacher was honest about and to the racist In the story, I'll give it a 7.
